Review

What is the Bible?
It is God’s revelation about Himself
Why read the Bible?
Ultimate purpose is to make you alive.
John 20:30–31 ESV
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Illustration: Instructions for Building
Loved Legos growing up
I was that kid with the two massive tubs full of pieces
And my mom would have this look of anxiety and dread when I pulled them out because she knew I was just going to dump these gallons and gallons of legos onto the floor.
I loved getting a new lego set for Christmas and pulling out the instructions and carefully following them to build a spacecraft or underwater laboratory.
Put the instructions were essential for me to know what I was to build and how to build it
God’s Word is very similar. It teaches us who God is and how we are to have a relationship with Him.
2 Timothy 3:15–17 ESV
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Wise for Salvation
Teaches you
Corrects you
Trains you for Righteousness
So that you can be complete

Why Aren’t We in the Bible?

QUESTION: Why do we have a hard time jumping into God’s Word to read it and study it?
Problem of Motive
Howard Hendricks says there are 3 kinds of Bible Students
To the first it’s like foul medicine - bitter and hard to take
To the 2nd it’s like eating raw vegetables - nourishing but not enjoyable
To the 3rd it’s like cookies and cream - can’t get enough
Problem of Priorities
We have other things we think we need to do first.
Luther, “I have so much to do today, therefore I shall spend the first three hours of my day in prayer”
Problem of Technique (we don’t know how)
I can’t change your motive or your priorities, but I can give you some techniques
We are going to spend some time on Observations, Interpretations, and Application
Some people call it the COMA method
It is A way of studying God’s Word, but not the ONLY way
What I like about it is that it is very foundational (All other ways pull from it in some way or fashion)
But

Last Week we started by talking about OBSERVATIONS

When we read the Bible we should start with Observations
Observations answer the question “What do I see?”
We do that by asking what 5 basic questions:
Who
What
When
Where
Why
ILLUSTRATION: Puzzle
Now a good way to think about Observations is a Puzzle
You look at each piece of the puzzle and you ask yourself “What is this piece” AND “Where does this go”
Likewise, when you make Observations you are asking “what is this in the text” and “how does it fit with the rest of the text”

Romans 6:23

Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
NIV - For the wages of sin is death,(A) but the gift (no mention of Free) of God is eternal life(B)in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord.
NLT - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Message - Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.
Key Words (Question: Looking at the passage what are some key words that stand out to you?) Underline or Circle Them
Wages
Sin
Death
Gift (free)
Eternal life
Lord
A part of good observation is asking a lot of questions
Microscope - taking it down to smaller and smaller things
Man with a rock through his house
Question: Looking at the passage, what are some questions you might have?
Why does it say “in” instead of “from”?
Cross References
Wages - ;
Genesis 2:17 ESV
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Romans 5:12 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Gift - , , Eph 2:8-9
Matthew 25:46 ESV
46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Romans 2:7 ESV
7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;
Eternal Life -
John 17:3 ESV
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
Lord -
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
