sanctification: A progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and more like Christ in our actual lives.

Big Question: If I have already been forgiven, then why can’t I partake in this sin

Why can’t I go get drunk this one time?

Why can’t I cheat on this test?

Why can’t I have sex with my girlfriend?

Why can’t I look at pornography?

On the flip side, “If I have already been forgiven, then why should I study my Bible…Pray…go to worship…why should I obey my parents”

Big Answer: Because if you have been forgiven, then you are a new creation.

Grace is greater than any sin (v.20)

As sin increased, grace increased all the more

We are not to continue in sin so that grace would abound

“How can we who died o sin still live in it?”

We have died to sin

We have died to the effects of sin

We have died to the grip of sin

The Grace we have received is not a pardon of our wrongs, no it is a fulfillment of our punishment, that Jesus paid for us.

We are to walk in newness of life

APPLICATION:

What happens when we choose sin?

We are rejecting Jesus’ work on the cross, our new creation by the Holy Spirit, and the glory of God the Father

And instead we are glorifying sin

We are giving the devil a foothold in our lives

We are hurting our witness as Christians

We are hurting others (sin is never kept in a vacuum)

The idea that you can do whatever you want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else is a false statement. Nothing you do is done in isolation

Pornography - Sinning against your family, your future spouse, you are sinning against the person you are watching

Drunkenness - Encouraging others to sin, hurting your family, friends

Language - hurting friends, teaching young kids that foul language is okay

Procrastination - Hurting family and friends, hurt teachers, setting a poor example to others

We are rejecting Jesus’ work on the cross, our new creation by the Holy Spirit, and the glory of God the Father

And instead we are glorifying sin

ILLUSTRATION:

Imagine that your birthday was coming up and that you had a huge party planned. You’d invited all of your friends and family, who love you, but the day of the party arrived and no one showed up.

Upon investigating where everyone was you find out that your parents just forgot for no particular reason they just sat around the house doing nothing. Your siblings they remembered but chose to do something different that they thought would be more fun. And your friends instead of showing they decided to hangout with the kid who bullies you and spent the entire time gossiping and speaking badly about you.

When we choose sin, we are saying that God means nothing to us, or at least He doesn’t mean as much as our sin.

Grace does not give us freedom to pursue sin.

1 John says, If we say we have fellowship with [God] while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”

We are still battling the effects of sin and temptation every day. Which is why the gospel is still good news. Because...

1 John also says, “But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous”

We are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus to walk in newness of life.

God’s grace has now given us new life to walk in obedience to Him!

We are being sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We are now able to obey God’s commands

We are living testimonies to the power of God

When people say that people can’t change we are able to stand and say that is a lie from the pit of hell and it smells like smoke.

We are able to have a taste of what heaven will be like

We are able to share the love of Jesus to others

APPLICATION:

What if I don’t know what I should do? We still face temptation.

- How do we fight it?

God has given us His Word to teach us about Him and how we are to glorify Him. So I want to encourage you to read the Bible. Start in the Gospel of John and read 5 mins a day.

And a good question to ask yourself is, “Did Jesus die on the cross so that I can ...”

Remind yourself of the gospel.

Remind yourself of your union with Jesus, both his death and resurrection.

Jesus says very clearly in , that

We are saved by the grace through faith in Jesus. But an evidence of that salvation is our sanctification.

You know a tree by it’s fruit. There are a lot of people who claim Jesus who are not believers.

If the fruit of your life is disobedience to God, lack of forgiveness and grace, a lack of love for others especially for other believers then you really need to take a step back and ask yourself. “Do I truly believe that Jesus is LORD?”

Grace does not give us freedom to pursue sin. It doesn’t mean we don’t sin.
