Discipline

No one wants to be

Stupid

Proverbs 12:1 NASB95
1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, But he who hates reproof is stupid.

What is Discipline?

discipline n. — the imposition of painful consequences or other disadvantages upon someone for their disobedience as part of a process of improving someone’s character or actions.
Proverbs 23:13–14 NASB95
13 Do not hold back discipline from the child, Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die. 14 You shall strike him with the rod And rescue his soul from Sheol.
Proverbs 19:18 NASB95
18 Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire his death.
Revelation 3:19 NASB95
19 ‘Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.
to discipline v. — to punish in order to gain control or enforce obedience.
Philippians 2:8 NASB95
8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
to be disciplined v. — to be or become subjected to a penalty (as pain, shame, restraint, or loss) for an offense in order to induce some behavior.
Hebrews 12:5–11 NASB95
5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, Nor faint when you are reproved by Him; 6 For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. 11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
to train (discipline) v. — to develop a person’s behavior by instruction and practice.
Job 5:17–18 NASB95
17 “Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. 18 “For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal.

1 Timothy 4:7 NASB95
