Message

Message

Paul’s hearts longing was to spend quality time with other faith filled believers and worship together
Romans 1:13 ESV
13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.
Rom 1.13
Romans 15:22–24 ESV
22 This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you. 23 But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you, 24 I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while.
Rom 15.22-
Paul = missionary church planter
no longer room = building on the foundations of others… planting churches
God | Satan hedged him in?
Paul longed for fellowship!
not just to receive…
mutual service… Here to Serve [Love Acts]
Rom 1.
Romans 1:11 ESV
11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you—
is this your hearts longing as well?
if not, why not?
perhaps you were burned in the past
perhaps you struggle socially
perhaps you miss-understand the necessity
perhaps you are a hypocrite / phony / fake
Romans 15:24 ESV
24 I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while.
Continue his work in Spain
Rome = new base of operations …
Missionary support …
Paul’s resignation was to the work and the call of God in his life no matter the personal cost
Romans 15:24 ESV
24 I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while.
Romans 15:25–26 ESV
25 At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. 26 For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem.

The Message of Romans 26. His Travel Plans

If he were to make all these journeys by ship, the first would be at least 800 miles, the second 1,500, and the third 700, making a minimum total of 3,000 miles, and many more if he were to travel some of the way by land rather than sea. When one reflects on the uncertainties and hazards of ancient travel, the almost nonchalant way in which Paul announces his intention to undertake these three voyages is quite extraordinary.

Acts 21:10–14 ESV
10 While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ” 12 When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 And since he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, “Let the will of the Lord be done.”
Acts 19:21 ESV
21 Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
Made it to Rome - No biblical evidence he ever made it to Spain...
Acts 28:30–31 ESV
30 He lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, 31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.
Paul’s resignation was to the work and the call of God in his life no matter the personal cost
Colin Kruse says
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: Paul’s Letter to the Romans 1. Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome En Route to Spain, 15:22–24

When we reconstruct the events of the two to three years immediately preceding the writing of Romans, the hindrances to his advancing further along the arc from Jerusalem to Illyricum are obvious. In my sketch of Paul’s career, I count several imprisonments (1 Cor. 15:32; 2 Cor. 1:8; Phlm 1; Phil 1:14); congregational problems in Colossae (Col 2:8–23), Laodicea (Col 2:1), Philippi (Phil 3:1–21), and Corinth (all of 1 and 2 Corinthians); postponed plans to deliver the Jerusalem offering because of congregational conflicts and threats from zealots (2 Cor. 8–9; Acts. 20:3); and extensive travels such as the abortive trip to Corinth (2 Cor. 2:1; 12:14; 13:1) and the anxious trip to Troas in search of Titus bearing news about his alienated congregation (2 Cor. 2:12–13; 7:5–16).

Like you Paul has/had plans that will never come to fruition, yet he was resigned to God’s sovergine will…
is this your resignation?
if not why not?
Romans 15:25 ESV
25 At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints.
Perhaps you don’t know you call…
Perhaps you are afraid to fail…
Perhaps you do not trust God and are unwilling to chance the cost…
Paul’s joy was found in his and others obedience to the cause for Christ
Romans 15:27 ESV
27 For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.
What would you have to give to pay back what Christ has done?
How would you make the accounts balance?
This is why we tithe to the church...
1 Corinthians 9:11 ESV
11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?
this is why we serve
Romans 8:18 ESV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
This is why we tithe...
This is why we serve...
This is why we sacrifice…
V25 & 27 = they were pleased!!!
is this where you find your joy?
if not why not?
Perhaps you feel defeated… Hopeless…
Perhaps you are cynical and jaded to this possibility…
Perhaps you do not know Jesus and therefore find no joy in Him…
Paul understood that his largest blessings were not of this world
Romans 15:28–29 ESV
28 When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you. 29 I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.
Romans 8:18 ESV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
1 Timothy 4:8 ESV
8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Paul = my desires must cease until I have completed what God has called me to, then and only then can I continue …
Paul wants to bring it personally !!
Paul - something to prove
Jews / Gentiles
Fulfillment of acceptance vicariously
serving the saints / apostles =
Fullness of the blessings of Christ
what does that mean?
what might that look like?
do you hunger for that?
do you believe this / are you seeking spiritual blessings?
if not why not?
Rom 15.28
Perhaps you have longed to see and have yet to see of these blessings of which I speak..
Perhaps you have recieved what you thought to be a blessing and it turned out not as such...
Perhaps you just don’t believe God’s promises on this matter or the things of this life are an Idol in your heart…
Paul’s greatest strength in ministry was in his recognition of his weakness and dependance on God
Romans 1:10 ESV
10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
Romans 15:30–33 ESV
30 I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, 31 that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. 33 May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Romans 1:10 ESV
10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
Romans 12:12 ESV
12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

V31 = Real Issues
Judea
unbelievers
cause him harm
Jerusalem
fear of rejection
V32 = God’s Will - Prayers answered… not in Paul’s way / God’s way
he came
he died
God Of Peace!!
do you recognize your weakness and depend on God’s strength?
if not why not?
Perhaps you are downcast seeing your weakness as what keeps you from God...
Perhaps you have been gifted with tenacity and drive and struggle with this truth…
Perhaps you are prideful and believe yourself above the need of God…
1 Thessalonians 1:2 ESV
2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers,
Rom 15.30
2 Timothy 1:3 ESV
3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.

Christ’s mission, Paul’s mission your mission is driven to action because of love!! do you see it here? Do you see here how “Love Acts”?
V22 = the reason Paul has been hindered to come to the Romans is because his Love for Jesus compels him to have Love for the gentiles which compels him to Act, to go to them and preach the gospel.
V24 = the reason he is going to Spain is because Paul understands Love Acts!
V25 = the reason Paul collects funds to bring to Jerusalem is because Love Acts!
V26-27 = the reason the churches were pleased to give is because they understood that Love Acts
V30 = Paul appeals to the Roman church [who has yet to even meet him] to STRIVE with him in prayer because he understands Love Acts!
These Romans will pray for Paul because they understand Love Acts!
do you know why Love Acts…?
To Make HIM Famous!
Prayer
God our father in Heaven we ask that:
we like Paul would desire of follow you no matter the call, no matter the danger, no matter the fear, no matter the cost.
we like Paul would seek unity and fervency in prayer, striving together to do the work you have called us to.
and we ask
that we like Paul would be willing to follow you even if it means our desires and plans are never seen to fruition, even when our earthly hopes are dashed, even when Your WILL not ours is done!
These things we ask you our great God and Father, so that we might be found complete and whole on the day you call us home as good and faithful servants for the glory of your name!
In the fullness of the blessings of Christ
because you are the God of peace!
That our Love would Act…
Like Paul to MAKE YOU FAMOUS
Amen
Communion
1 Corinthians 11:23–29 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Benediction
Romans 15:33 ESV
33 May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
