Start with some “you had one job” pics.
Right before Jesus went to Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father until He returns for his people, He gave his people one job. Now there’s a lot to the one job, but He gave us one job. It’s a job with eternity hanging in the balance.
provide context for what is happening
READ Matt 28:16-20
Every Christian is charged to call people from every tribe, tongue, and nation to follow Jesus.
Every Christian is charged to call people from every tribe, tongue, and nation to follow Jesus.
We were saved to do this! We must do this!
Ephesians 1:4b–6 ESV
even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Ephesians 1:4b-
Anyone remember what Jesus told the first apostles when He called them to follow Him? “I will make you fishers of men.” Jesus won’t come back until the church has done it!
Matthew 24:14 ESV
And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
This is so important, so we need to understand it! We need to understand from two view points: are we doing it and are we calling others to do it?

The basis for our commission

We must tell others because Jesus is King over all.
Read some funny quotes from the State Gazette class of 2031 special, then read the quotes from students wanting to be police and teachers, wanting authority.
Jesus’ authority is the basis for every part of this commission.
We as his people obey Jesus because He is King over all.
We go and we tell others to follow Him because He is King over all and they must make Him Lord to be a part of his Kingdom.
He has authority over every place and every person He is sending us to, so nothing can happen to us outside of his supervision.
Daniel
Daniel 7:14 ESV
And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Usually, when we hear someone has authority over us we think it’s a bad thing.
Jesus created us, knows us, and has what is best for us. We are created to live under his authority, not to live apart from it!
Fighting his authority is bad for us. He loves us and desires good for us.
John 10:10 ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
So if He is our Lord, we submit to his authority and we take up the task of calling others to make Him Lord, and we trust in his authority as we go about this task. And our task is to make disciples.

Our commission

Jesus has told us to make disciples.
If you play sports, when you go out on the field or the court or the floor, your coach gives you a job. You’d better do that job. If you’re playing…, then your job might be…, and you’d better do it.
I’ve been coaching first base for Parker’s coach pitch team. I tell the kids to hit the ball and then immediately run as fast as they can to me. But instead, a lot of them hit the ball, watch it, then casually jog to the base. They usually get out.
When the leader gives directions, it’s up to their followers to follow those directions!
He’s commanded us to make disciples. But what is a disciple?
A student or follower of someone else. They study what the person does and they learn to do it themselves.
We are called to make disciples of Jesus.
He tells us three parts to this.
Go… all nations.
Go means we must take action and be intentional about making disciples.
All nations includes this one and ones on the other side of the world.
Nations is referring to people groups.
This is not a command for you to literally visit every people group in the world to preach the Gospel. But it is a command to take action to make disciples locally and abroad.
There will be people from every people group who are disciples of Jesus.
Revelation 5:9 ESV
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
There is still much work to be done here.
The Joshua Project estimates there are 7,106 unreached people groups in the world, and 3.16 billion unreached people.
If we believe the Bible, we have to believe what it says about these people who have not believed the Gospel of Jesus.
So we go make disciples. What does that look like?
Baptizing
The first part of becoming a disciple is choosing to follow Jesus. Placing faith in him for forgiveness of sins and righteousness to stand before God.
It’s our call to present the Gospel to others, near and far, in hopes that they would be believe and be saved.
Romans 10:13–15 ESV
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
Being baptized does not make that happen, but it is a sign to the world that they have happened.
Romans 6:3–4 ESV
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Being baptized does not save you, but you are commanded to be baptized after you become a Christian.
It’s not that one has to be baptized in order to become a Christian, but once you are a Christian, your public declaration of faith in Christ necessarily involves baptism. To neglect baptism is to dishonor and disobey Christ.
–David Platt
Two important things about baptism...
We never see anyone be baptized before professing faith in Jesus.
Baptism means immersion.
So baptism is a symbol of becoming a Christ follower, the beginning of discipleship, not the end!
Teaching
Discipleship doesn’t end until you get to Heaven.
This is where the local church comes in. Our missionary efforts need to be connected to a local church because this is the first place where God intended this part of discipleship to happen.
We must obey, which we will do if we truly love Jesus!
John 14:15 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Too many today believe you can say you love Jesus, but then reject the commandments that aren’t fun or easy. If you do this, Jesus is not your Lord, you are.
If we are going to obey the commandments, we have to know the commandments.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3
We need to read the Word, hear the Word taught, pray the Word, sing the Word. This is how we know it and observe it.
So now it’s gut check time. We need to look at this from two sides.
Have you done these things? Acknowledge and surrendered to Jesus as King of creation? Placed your faith in Him for forgiveness and righteousness? Followed through on that decision with baptism? Are you seeking to learn all He has commanded you and to obey it?
You need to make sure you’ve done this side before going to the other side.
The other side is are you calling others to do these things? Are you sharing the Gospel with people? Are you involved with missions through prayer, giving, and going?
If you have questions about how to do this, I’d love to try to answer those questions for you!
If you’re looking for opportunities to go on a mission trip, we’ve got a short one to Nashville coming up in June. Hopefully I’ll be getting some more local opportunities lined up for us too.
Are we being obedient to this Great Commission? We laughed at the “you had one job” pictures earlier, but is that what we look like when it comes to the Great Commission?
I’ll leave you tonight with what Jesus left his disciples with, a promise.

The provision for our commission

He will be with us as we go, wherever we go. And remember, He has all authority.
That doesn’t mean it will be easy or that bad things can’t happen, but it does mean that He’s with us and we go in his power, not our own. Understand that you have been faithful to the call as long as you present the Gospel.
So go boldly. Go knowing He’s promised that some will believe.
