Introduction

Q - Have you ever been asked or prompted to do something and responded to yourself “I ain’t doing that?”
Homework, extra credit, parents, favor, etc.
Reverse
We do the same with our Christian life.
Reverse
Jesus just told the disciples to rejoice, because they know and see Him.

God’s Word

Opening Conversion
Lawyer - expert in the Old Testament (Bible) - put Jesus to the test by asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus - “Do what the law says and love God wholly and your neighbor as yourself.”
Lawyer - “Okay. Who is my neighbor?”
Parable from Jesus
Helpless man going from Jericho to Jerusalem. The road was known for evil activity.
Robbers beat the man half dead and stole everything.
Priest saw, passed by.
The person who should have took action. Viewed as the religious leader by all. They were representatives of God to the people. Touching the man would make himself unclean according to the law.
Levite saw, passed by.
Touching the man would make himself unclean according to the law.
Good Samaritan saw, stopped, and took action.
The last person they would have thought Jesus was refer to to make his point. Jews despised and did not accept Samaritans. They looked down on them. Last person to qualify as a neighbor to the man in need.
Conclusion
Jesus - “Who proved to be a neighbor to the man?”
Lawyer - “The one who showed mercy.”
Jesus - “You go, and do likewise.”
*What a punch to the face!*
This story delivered by Jesus is extremely accurate.
Point of the parable - Have mercy & compassion to those who are around you at all times.
Q - What causes us to be a neighbor to those around us?
A - Jesus is our ultimate Neighbor who had compassion and mercy on us. God’s love poured out to you in Jesus.
Love God. Love neighbor. Then you will be and do what God expects in the Old Testament. Such love must not be half-hearted. It must be all-encompassing. Every part of you—thoughts, emotions, feelings, actions—must be controlled by love for God and for others.
Q - Which one in the story are you?
Lawyer - wishing to justify himself
Priest & Levite - blind eyes, half-hearted
Samaritan - taking action
A - I think more than enough, we are the lawyer more than anyone. Always putting God “to the test.” IDK why we put Him to the test, because most of the times we do not do what He commands; instead we convince ourselves that we are living for Jesus enough to the point we justify our actions.
“But I go to church!”
“But I was nice to that one person the other day!”
“But I don’t feel like it!”
“But I don’t think that’s what the Bible was saying!”
“But I’m supposed to ‘work’ for my salvation. It’s all about grace!”
“I ain’t doing that.”
The lawyer doesn’t understand the weight of knowing God and His love. God and & His love changes a person. Jesus was illustrating what it looks like to know God and live because of it.
