Intro: Generally in studying a Biblical character, we notice the high points of their lives, but not the low.
Let’s see the valleys of Moses’ life to see his strength of character.
I) Birth and childhood
Born under a death sentence – ,
His parents had to give him up as an infant –
Grew up in Pharaoh’s household – – and taught as an Egyptian – – corrupt in its idolatry and emphasis on power and wealth
Rejected by his people, and separated for another forty years –
One clear lesson is we cannot blame our environment for our problems
II) Not a “born leader”
He did not want to deliver the people at God’s call – ; – since he had failed already
People rebelled even to point of wanting to stone him – – on more than one occasion – – which discouraged Moses
True leadership is not the desire to be in charge, or being popular, but doing what is needed
III) Family did not support him
Wife opposed him – – in keeping the covenant
Brother made the golden calf at Mt. Sinai – – in abandonment of Moses
Sister and brother rebelled against his leadership – – calling him an egoist
Although fleshly family can be our greatest support, we cannot depend on that –
IV) Moses rebelled against God
At waters of Meribah – – in arrogance of frustration
Lost opportunity to enter the land of Canaan, although he desired it greatly – – he paid a very high price for a moment of frustration
Lesson for us to take God’s righteous judgment very seriously –
Concl: Through all the valleys of Moses we see the strength of faith that Moses developed to be considered faithful – .
