Text:  II Samuel 12:19-23

Introduction:  It is never easy to lose a loved one, especially a child.  When going through the grieving process it is natural to ask questions.  David asked questions as well. One of the questions that may be asked is “Will I see my child again?”  The text will help to answer such a monumental question. What we see here is a great tragedy in the life of David because of the loss of the child.

We can rejoice in the midst of great tragedy

I.                   In the midst of tragedy, David worshipped God (vs. 20)

II.        In the midst of tragedy, David relied upon God’s grace (vs.22)

A.    We are reminded in times like this about passages like Ephesians 1:11, Romans 8:28.

B.     This death, although painful at the present, is from the hand of God not only for our good, but for the good of the child.  This child has gained eternal glory and is safe in the arms of God, alive forever.  This child has not known the wickedness of this world.

III.             In the midst of tragedy, David had an eternal hope (vs. 23)

a.       David knew that the child would not come back to life

b.      David also knew that he would one day see the child and this provided comfort for him.  He knew that their eternal future was with God.

Conclusion:  We can have the same hope that David had by having a relationship with Jesus Christ, who gave his life for our sins, in order that we would have eternal life.
