First Things First

Open with Video about the resurrection
Before you can celebrate the resurrection you have to come to the cross…you have to understand how Jesus got to the tomb in the first place…and why...
John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
God so loved the world — The “world” is every single person who ever lived or will live on this earth. That would include all of us. Every person, no matter when they were born, no matter where they were born, no matter their nationality, race, socio economic status. God loves each and every one of us.
But this isn’t just a casual or passive kind of affection. God loves us with determination, passion and zeal. He loves us to the point He willingly gave His Son to die on the cross for our sins.
Sin — Any thought, word or deed contrary the the will of God. It is to miss the mark of God’s way of doing things. It is to violate God’s moral law.
God wrote His moral law on our hearts and convicts us when we violate it. Our conscience tells us that we are sinners…that we have hurt the heart of God…we have disobeyed. And this is true of all of us!
Romans 3:23 NASB95
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Sin separates us from God — God hates sin…He is holy and cannot be in the presence of sin. So when mankind chose sin we chose separation from God.
Romans 6:23 NASB95
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
There is nothing we can do to save ourselves…We are hopelessly broken and lost. We are incapable of even hearing the voice of God apart from His initiative to reveal Himself to us…But He has revealed Himself and His plan to atone for our sins…Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus is the atonement and propitiation for our sins. He suffered on the cross and died to pay for our sins (atonement). Without an atonement for sin we would forever stay lost, separated from God in hell.
1 John 2:2 NASB95
and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
Propitiation — This means that Jesus took upon himself all of the consequences and wrath due us for our sins.
Have you ever worried that God hated you, was angry with you or would never forgive you for your sins??? This verse is the answer for those fears.
To summarize — God has made it clear that He loves everyone with a passionate, sacrificial kind of love…He died on the cross for every lost person, all of the world…That He took not only the consequences for your sins but all of the anger, wrath and hurt your sins caused the heart of God.

Are You Truly Sorry For Your Sins?

Does this touch your soul this morning? Are you sorry for your sins? Are you sorry for them to the point you are ready to get right with God?
The Bible says there are two kind of sorrow over sins and people always have one of the two…one kind of sorrow leads to salvation and one keeps one in sin and death...
You are either sorry it is wrong to sin; sorry got caught doing it…or you are sorry you sinned (disobeyed God) and hurt the heart of God…a God who loves you and sent His Son to die for your sins.
2 Corinthians 7:10 NKJV
For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
What kind of sorrow is in your heart this morning? How do you feel about sin? The believer in Christ is sorry their sin hurts the heart of God. We detest sin....we are broken over it…we came to Him for forgiveness of it and now hate it ourselves…is that you? Or are you just sorrow it’s wrong to sin? Sorry you got caught?
For some this morning you can’t celebrate the resurrection of Christ with us because you have ever never experienced Godly sorrow over your sins and turned from sin to Christ.
You still like your sin…you don’t want to let it go. You want to go to heaven but on your terms…you don’t want to repent of your sin and give your life to Jesus…you just want Him to pay for your sin while you enjoy the pleasures of it.
If you are looking for a get of hell free card it doesn’t exist. You don’t get saved until you get broken…Until you become broken over your sin and realize it has put you at war with God you cannot be saved no matter what head knowledge you have of His salvation through Christ.
You have hurt God’s heart and destroyed all relationship with Him because of it…you have done something on a scale so bad that God’s Son had to die to pay for it. Are you broken?
Does this grieve you? Are you ready to turn from your sin and give your life to Christ? Are you ready to die to who you are so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead you too might be resurrected to a new life in Him? So you should not perish?
Romans 6:1–4 NASB95
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
The resurrection is hope of eternal life in Jesus but in order to have new life you have to die to the old one first.
Right now you are in your spiritual father Adam…By faith in Christ you can be free from your spiritual heritage of sin and death…placed in Jesus Christ instead…your new spiritual father.
But in order to do so you must admit you are sinner…that you have broken God’s heart and disobeyed Him…Believe He died on the cross to pay for your sins…took the wrath due you for them…and give your life to God.
Invite prayers for salvation...
Believe, have faith in Christ for eternal life…so that you, like Christ, might arise

Resurrection

Now that we have talked about the work of the cross and you have had the opportunity to be saved from sin through the work of Christ…
Let’s talk about the empty tomb and the meaning of the resurrection of Christ for all of us.
Spiritually — First, we have been cleansed of all sin. We have been justified, declared in right standing with God.
We have been given a new nature and have been truly born again. We have been exactly what Paul talks about in “Raised to walk in a new life.”
Romans 6:4 NASB95
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
This is why the true Christian doesn’t want to sin…doesn’t mean we are perfect and we do sometimes mess up and sin…but we hate it, repent immediately and commit not to do it again…because we love God and it breaks us to think we would do anything to hurt His heart.
We still live in this broken body, marred by the effects of sin. We still have a mind, will and emotions affected by the fallen world in which we live. We are still bombarded by the curse all around us.
Physically — Someday, these bodies are going to succumb to the effects of the curse of sin and stop working. They will be disposed of in a grave. Our spirit will be free from them and dwell with Christ in Heaven.
When Jesus died His Spirit left His body and His body was likewise disposed of in a tomb.
But what happened in the case of Jesus gives us hope for what will happen to our own bodies as well. We have been saved body, soul and mind. We have been completely saved in all of our parts. The resurrection of Jesus is our hope that we will live forever body, soul and spirit!
Death could not hold Jesus and it will not hold us either because of our faith in Jesus.
Jesus is the firstborn from the dead (). What happened in His case will happen for us as Christ one day raises our bodies from the dead and makes them perfect…free from the consequences and curse of sin!
1 Thessalonians 4:13–17 NASB95
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
And all of creation will be delivered from this curse as well.
Romans 8:18–21 NASB95
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Someday all of this is going to be redeemed from the curse and consequences of sin…the resurrection of Christ is the deposit guaranteeing what is to come.
The roses will be more beautiful than we can imagine…our own bodies will be more beautiful than we can comprehend…The whole of creation is going to be free of sin, the curse which arose from sin.
Death is destroyed in all of its parts…We are free from its power, consequences and curse. The resurrection of Jesus is the testimony to the complete defeat of sin and death…and I might add Satan too.
Death couldn’t hold Jesus…It could not defeat Him…He arose! He arose! Hallelujah Christ arose!!!
Because death could not hold my Jesus, it will never hold me either…not spiritually or physically!
Do not let fear, guilt, shame or death rock your world anymore…Do not let anything keep you from your place in Christ…Child of God…Son, daughter of the King! Redeemed…Set free…Holy, righteous, loved, freed, blessed, highly favored…The one who has received eternal life!

Conclusion

It is time to get saved…and remember the benefits of our salvation…what is and what is to come! He arose…and by faith we arise with Him both spiritually…and one day physically too.
Do you have such assurances? Are you ready should Jesus come back today? He really is coming back. It is happening…This life will come to an end for you someday…But it doesn’t have to be the end.
Do you have Godly sorrow? If not pray for it.
Are you really ready to repent of your sin, die to it and be raised to walk in a new life? You can right now.
Do you believe that God loves you with a relentless, infinite, indescribable kind of love that won’t let you go?
