Introduction

How many of you have ever dealt with a water problem in a home?
What is the solution?

Our Needs

When we pray, we should ask God for things that really matter
Too often, this isn’t the case
We pray for others, we pray for our world, and it sounds pious, but it’s really a cover
This requires honesty about our life & situation
How many times have we gone to bed feeling as though we’re not doing enough, or we’re not good enough, or we can’t parent well enough, or we’re not well enough liked. Or we know there’s a bill on the table and the checking account doesn’t have enough. Or we see the people around us and wonder how it is that they have it all together and we feel like we’re just holding it together
We can tell ourselves to fake it until we make it; we can keep telling ourselves that we’re a good person with really good intentions with some problems, that what I really need instead of a savior is just a really good counselor.
or we can face our situation honestly
What we realize in our moments of honesty is that we can’t provide for these needs
We can come to the realization that we can’t do everything, be everything, help everything, let alone get through our own to do list, take care of ourselves, or help those closest to us
It’s hard enough to come to this realization on our own. Harder to share it with someone else in a truly vulnerable way—not angry or demanding or blaming. And hardest yet is to admit it before God. It’s like having to admit that you actually do need to call the plumber.
Who likes admitting that they’ve been wrong? Or that they can’t handle the situation themselves?

Met at the Cross

So what are we to do?
This is the danger of the second half of Jesus’ model prayer—the Lord’s prayer. We need to be vulnerable in front of an Almighty, holy God. We have to stand defenseless in front of the being whom we’ve rejected, ignored, denied, sold out, and disobeyed.
But this is the joy of preaching this part of prayer on Easter Sunday, because when we stand and bare ourselves before the Almighty, God looks upon us and sees the righteousness of his son. Christ deals with our sin on the cross and restores our relationship with God so that we can confidently approach God.
As a result, we can ask God to meet our needs
Daily bread, like we talked about last week
Forgiveness, because we understand that we need to be brought back into relationship with God
Stage crew…did you plug it in?
Deliverance, because we know we can’t deliver ourselves; we’ve tried and failed too many times
In the end, we find that through prayer our needs are met, and our life is shaped by God
