Easter Sunrise Service
2019
It had to happen
Welcome
Intro
Thank you for allowing myself and the team to go down to Colombia and build relationships
We will have a service planned later in the future where we will share about the trip
This morning I want us to look at the reason we celebrate today
No better place to start than in the beginning
Genesis 3:1–7 NASB95
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
Prior to these verses we get a glimpse of what God had intended before sin entered the world
True fellowship with God
But then sin enters the world
Both Adam and Eve eat of the fruit that God specifically told them not to eat of, they were disobedient
The tempter comes along and begins to ask questions and make them doubt what God actually said
They eat of the fruit and what God said happens, their eyes are open and they see they are naked so they make close
What do you do you when you realize you are naked, you make clothes
They were attempting to cover what they had done wrong because they could see their nakedness
They used fig leaves in hopes of covering and not seeing what they had done wrong anymore
The problem, fig leaves don’t offer protection and aren’t sturdy meaning you would continue to have to cover and cover as the leaves wore our and tore
Adam and Eve thought they could sin and cover it themselves
You and I sin and think we can cover it ourselves, we think we can handle it ourselves and we will deal with it by ourselves just like Adam and Eve
Do you understand that you and I cannot cover our sin!
We can’t even make the payment for sin!
Which is why we celebrate today!
Genesis 3:8–13 NASB95
8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Because they understand they have sinned they try and hide even more
The hear God’s footsteps, side note how cool would that be to hear His footsteps
They hear God walking and now they have sinned so they think they can hide
God goes through this questioning with them and then they begin the blame game
Notice they never took responsibility for their sin but they thought they could handle it and cover it up
This is very much the problem we are in as well till Jesus shows up
See you and have sinned and we have missed the mark, and we have messed up
If we are honest we with each other, we have tried to cover it up ourselves, we have tried to handle our own sin problem ourselves
God then covers their sin problem, notice through their sin is not without consequences
Genesis 8:20–21 NASB95
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
Good took some skin and covered them
The skin covering was going to last longer and be more durable for them as they were going to be sent out of the garden because God loved them enough to know if they ate of the tree of life in that state they would live forever in a sinful state and God didn’t want that
But God used a skin covering, which meant something had to die
Becasue of sin something had to die
See already from the very beginning the price of sin was death
We celebrate today because Jesus died and covered our sin once and for all
Jesus is the complete and ultimate covering
Jesus is the answer to our sin problem
Hebrews 10:11–14 NASB95
11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
This church is why we celebrate today because our sin problem was taken care!!!
We no longer have to carry the weight of our own sin around, we no longer have to deal with our own sin, we no longer have to cover our own sin
Jesus did that on the cross and the empty tomb
Church this is why we celebrate today!
Mark 15:22–41 NASB95
22 Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take. 25 It was the third hour when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 27 They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.” 29 Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. 32 “Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him. 33 When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. 38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40 There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Jesus paid the price for our sin
This is the covering for our sin
But it didn’t stop with just the death because had it stopped at the death then we would continue the annual sacrifice of animals to cover our sin
But no it didn’t stop with death
Matthew 28:1–6 NASB95
1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. 2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. 3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
Jesus has conquered death and thus conquered our sin problem!!
Praise the Lord church this is why we celebrate today because our sacrifice to cover our sin and defeated death
We no longer have to be a slave to sin, we no longer have to be owned by our sin, we no longer have to cover our own sin
The bible says that those who cry out to Jesus will be saved
We will ask the musicians to come up and as they play
if you have not made a personal decision to have Jesus be lord of your life, I want to invite you to do that this morning
maybe you need to make some other decision
or maybe you simply need to come the altar in prayer
