Video- What’s so good about Good Friday?
Last week
Pilate is a conflicted man.
He has done all that is conceivable in his mind to appease the Jews.
He has offered them Barabbas or Jesus.
They want Jesus dead.
Let Barabbas go!
He has beaten Jesus unjustly to the point where Jesus is a pitiful sight to behold.
But even after, the the bloodthirsty Jews in unbridled sin and anger cry for Jesus to be crucified.
Crucify!
Crucify!
Pilate feels as if he has no other choice.
But Pilate does have a choice, just as the Jews have a choice.
Pilate, in his ignorance, chooses to fear the Jews rather than the King of Truth.
The Jews, in the knowledge of all that God has done, choose to cry for Jesus to be crucified.
And thats what happened.
John 19:
Couple things here.
They are in public place where they crucify.
The reason for this was twofold.
Shame.
The Romans were artists in public shame.
This is what they did.
They wanted to humiliate anyone who would dare oppose Caesar.
Horror to other criminals.
The crucified in public to provide a spectacle so that other people would look and essentially know, “This is what happens to people who oppose Rome.”
Sometimes they would let people hang for days to send a message.
This particular day, they are crucifying three people.
Two men who both had done things worthy of death.
And again we see this happens as God said it would happen through his prophets.
Isaiah in says this:
He is quite literally counted among the transgressors.
Pilate would even write the supposed sin that Jesus committed when he wrote- Jesus the Nazarene- King of the Jews.
This was common practice.
They would put the reason for the death sentence.
Bu the Jews don’t like what Pilate wrote so they protest.
They don’t want Jesus to be their king or even pictured as such.
But Pilate is tired of being manipulated by the Jews, so he leaves it.
I think this serves two purposes.
Pilate’s sinful purposes of humiliating the Jews and Jesus.
To actually proclaim the truth of who Jesus was.
Jesus is King and he is dying because he is King.
It is through Jesus’s death that he will be exalted, but he must first be humiliated.
And there are many people watching this.
John gives a reports of a few people.
John 19:23-
Soldiers-
They are dividing the clothing of Jesus.
This was customary.
The executioners got the clothes of th eprisoners they were executing.
But more so than custom it is to fulfill Scripture, because after dividing the clothes as best they can, they gamble over the last piece of clothing because they cant tear it to piece because its one piece.
And this fulfills Scripture, specifically Psalm 22:18
I know this may seem like a minimal point at this point, but all of this was to fulfill prophecy and Scripture.
This matters because God promised it would happen.
It speaks to the validity of the Old Testament.
The validity of the New Testament and the validity of prophets and apostles.
Jesus’ death happened ACCORDING to the Scriptures even to the smallest detail.
ACCORDING to the Scriptures.
John simply records what he sees.
and we see a contrast from the acts of the soldiers, who really couldn’t care less who Jesus was, and four ladies.
John 1
And make no mistake these women are heartbroken at the events that are taking place.
These women would have writhed in pain and sorrow while the rest of the crowd cried Crucify him.
These women are not there at the cross to mock and ridicule and to humiliate him.
These women are there to mourn, to provide what kind of care they could for Jesus in that moment.
But Jesus cares for them, specifically his own mother.
This is quite remarkable, that as Jesus hangs dying, that he is making provision for His mother.
But not only her.
But for us as well.
Look what he says.
Here we see that the cross is about provision.
Jesus is about provision.
He is making sure she is taken care of by a believer.
(Siblings not believer yet)
This is what his life was about.
This is what His death was about.
Look in verse 28-30
Jesus knows whats been prophesied.
He knows whats been done, and everything down to the last detail is line.
Jesus hour has come and it goes precisely as prophesied.
And he knows this.
He says I am thirsty.
And even this fulfills Scripture.
is a messianic Psalm that speaks very clearly about things of the cross.
Psalm 22
Even a matter so small as his thirst, is predicted and carried out to the smallest detail.
And this is how it had to be.
Jesus doesn’t procure our salvation apart from perfection.
Jesus does exactly what the Father had planned exactly how the Father had planned it.
And he is thirsty.
He ought to be.
He lost an inordinate amount of blood.
the sheer effort it took to breathe on the cross would have exhausted him.
He’s thirsty
So the soldiers give Jesus some sour wine.
Jesus takes what he can from the sour wine, and with one last statement he says the most meaningful statement for my life and for your life if you are His.
And then we come to one of the most meaningful statements made in all of history.
It is finished.
In Greek - Tetelestai.
These words that come out of Jesus’s mouth is the single greatest statement made by any man.
