Two thieves: one defiant, the other honest

Jesus is not like us - he’s innocent
Remember Me

Then the thief said to Jesus something like this:
King, remember me “for good” when you come into your kingdom. A future event.
Confession: Death isn’t the end of everything. Beyond death was the Kingdom
Jesus’ response
Not the checklist we have
‘into your kingdom’. It is not easy to see how fully the penitent thief could have entered into an understanding of Jesus’ Person and work. But these words show that he realized at least that death would not be the end of everything for him and that beyond death was the kingdom. Jesus’ words of reassurance gave him more than he had asked for. Not only would he have a place in the kingdom, whenever that would be established, but that very day he would enter Paradise.
Today…soon...Paradise…Eden Restored
The Kingdom and then some. The restored, peaceful dwelling of God with his people.
Thirsty
Thirsty
In people who are dying, thirst and pain go together.
Jesus’ experience: The dying process was meant to last a long time. Torment by flogging, open wounds, being denied water. Loss of blood, minerals. Carrying a cross and hung on it in the heat of the desert...No clothes, food, water. No help allowed.
Except wine mixed with myrrh that would numb the pain in the final stages; to help him get through his crucifixion. He declined it the first time it was offered.
begins with Deep waters rising - the grave is closing.

with waiting for my God.

His mother taken care of, In order to complete, fulfill everything revealed about him in the OT, Jesus said, I am thirsty.

and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.

Their insults have broken my heart,

Not the same as what was offered at first. Cheap, common wine tasting like vinegar. .
If only one person would show some pity;

But instead, they give me poison for food;
they offer me sour wine for my thirst.

Jesus knew his calling - to fulfill God’s promise capture in the prophetic words of the OT.
Words capture the essence of the cry of of the physical, emotional, and spiritual pain of a people Isreal buried under generations of national and personal failure - sin.
- blessed are those that hunger and thirst for righteousness…they will be filled.
Their words are now his - taking their sin, pain and thirst for the good things of God upon himself so that their thirst would be quenched.
Fulfilling the promises of God to the end.
A common experience in Jesus’ day to be hungry and thirsty. Hard to think of anything else but food and water.
