Second Word On The Cross

Luke 23:43 ESV
And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
2 Corinthians 12:3 ESV
And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—
Revelation 2:7 ESV
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’
What is Paradise?

PARADISE (παράδεισος, paradeisos). A loanword from ancient Persian pairi-daeza which can mean “an enclosed space,” “park,” or “garden.” Associated with heaven, New Jerusalem, and Christ’s dwelling place.

A very familiar verse that we have been listening over the past years about the cross and the thieves that have been put on cross together with Jesus.
And we have learnt that this scripture tells us about repentance and a promise of God.
But if we closely look into the situation in Golgotha after the crucifixion....we can summarize the following :
We look at three characters in the crucifixion. And each person crucified gives us a lesson of what and how to respond to situations around us and to suffering of our own.
Two ways to respond to suffering
Exemplary life of Jesus.
We look at three characters in the crucifixion. And each person crucified gives us a lesson of what and how to respond to situations around us and to suffering of our own.
The first thief
Luke 23:39 ESV
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”
To him right and wrong, praise and blame, good and bad are of no interest: his one objective is to save his earthly skin. He might even believe Jesus is the Messiah, the King of the Jews. But, it's only a matter of convenience to him: he'll take anybody as king who can get him off the cross.

The thief had no spirit of brokenness, or guilt, or penitence, or humility. He could only see Jesus as a possible power by which to escape the cross. He did not see him as a king to be followed. It never entered his mind that he should say he was sorry and should change.
The second Thief
Luke 23:41 ESV
And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”
Luke 23:40–42 ESV
But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Do not believe in false talk

2 Corinthians 12:2–3 ESV
I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—

Revelation 21:2 ESV
And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Peter’s statements
Acts 2:27 ESV
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
Acts 2:27–32 ESV
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.

Acts 2:32 ESV
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
The Lexham Bible Dictionary Paradise in the New Testament

• The criminal was with Christ in paradise in the Underworld on Good Friday.

• Paul visited paradise in the third heaven where Christ currently dwells (2 Cor 12:2, 4; Phil 1:21–26; 3:20).

• The saints enter paradise in the New Jerusalem because the Lamb (Christ) will dwell there forever and ever (Rev 2:7; 21:22; 22:1–5, 14).

But in all this, the one thing that Jesus chose to mention to the repentant thief on the cross (if you can only say one thing, what do you say?): "You will be with me today." You have to love and admire Jesus a lot for that to be a solace when you leave this life behind. It reminds me of that great spiritual, "When I come to die, give me Jesus . . . You can have all this world, give me Jesus."
