Introduction:

You had the countdown (NO PEEKING)
I think most of us know the what of Easter (the facts) but we want to focus on the WHY of Easter this morning… (Jaden: Can I have a cookie?)
You had to go hide
Try not to be found....
some versions: countdown over means you can try and tag home base
Some versions: You screamed out OLY OLY OXEN FREE!

Luke 23:44–46 NLT
44 By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 45 The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. 46 Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.
Luke
Hebrews 10:19–23 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
Hebrews 4:
Hebrews 4:14–16 NLT
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 10:19–22 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. The relief I get from hiding
The Cross reminds us that God is not hiding, He is only seeking
:
The cross gives us the permission to stop hiding and start seeking
Scripture:
Hebrews 10:19–23 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. Hebrews 4:
Hebrews 10:19–23 ESV
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Jesus gave us the freedom to stop hiding and start seeking

Hebrews 10:19–23 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. Stop hiding from my weakness

Matthew 24:45–46 NLT
45 “A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them. 46 If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward.
Matthew 27:45–46 NLT
45 At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

1. The Cross means I don’t have to hide from my weakness

Explain:

Jesus took what was a clear weakness…a clear symbol of death and powerlessness and he turned it around
Hebrews 4:14–16 NLT
So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
The moment he died on that cross was the moment that we didn’t need to hide
We spend so much of our lives thinking we need to hide our weakness from God and each other it’s like a game of hide and seek.

Story: Rules Hide and Seek

Rules Hide and Seek

You had to go hide
Try not to be found....
some versions: countdown over means you can try and tag home base
Apply: Don’t
Some versions: You screamed out OLY OLY OXEN FREE!
The most likely explanation for the phrase is that it is a corruption of the German “Alle, alle auch sind frei” which, when translated, means “Everyone, everyone also is free.”
Ephesians 2:8–9 NLT
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
We don’t need to hide behind our accomplishments
Mark 15:37–38 NLT
37 Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

2. The Curtain means I don’t have to hide behind my strength

Explain:

Temple curtain seperated the priests from the holiest place in the temple
…Old law…new covenant
Ephesians 2:8–9 NLT
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Old law placed a barrier over time…new covenant broke that barrier down
Some things that were important before become barriers now
Ephesians 2:8–9 NLT
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Jesus has removed EVERY barrier that exists between us and him

It’s because the grave is empty that our hearts can be abundantly full
It’s because the curtain is torn apart that my heart, my life can be put back together
It’s because of Jesus that there is nothing holding me back
