Introduction

Greetings...
The role of women in the church and society for that matter has always been a struggle for those in the world to understand and that struggle has always, in one form or another, permeated the church.
Satan has been very successful in getting women to believe the lie that being in subjection to man and not having a leadership role in the church, somehow, makes them less valuable.
The feminist movement or feminazi movement, which is a more accurate term, has fulled this ridiculous notion.
It’s unfortunate so many women in the church have bought into this horrific lie of Satan.
Jeanene Reese, a professor at Abilene Christian University published a book called “Bound & Determined” which the Christian Chronicle wrote an article about.
“Reese wisely avoids a narrow-minded proof-text tactic.”
In other words she doesn’t need the Bible to say she is right with God.
This subject is only a “hot topic” because so many have believed Satan’s Lie on women’s role in the church.
Today we are going to examine what the Bible actually says concerning women and their role in the church.

What The Issues Are Not & Are About

The issue is not about the worth of women.

The topic of women in the church has nothing to do with the value of women to God or man.
Proverbs 31:10 ESV
10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
Proverbs 18:22 ESV
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.

The issue is not about the capability of women.

The topic of women in the church has nothing to do with how capable women are at doing things in the church.
Romans 16:1 ESV
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae,

The issue is not about what society expects from the church.

The topic of women in the church has nothing to do with what society expects from us, only what the Bible teaches.
1 Corinthians 1:26–27 ESV
26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

The issue is about what the Scriptures authorize.

It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about women’s role in the church, it only matters what God thinks of their role.
Colossians 3:17 ESV
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Summery

The only thing that matters is God’s perspective not any other perspective.
However, if we want to please God and spend eternity with Him we ought to align our perspective with His.

The Value & Limitation Of Women In The Church

God greatly values women.

So many have misunderstood God and the church on the value of women.
They have concluded that because women have a primarily domestic role and are expressly limited in leadership that women are to be spiritually passive.
This is not true, in fact...
Women must actively live righteous lives.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Women must actively grow spiritually.
2 Peter 3:18 ESV
18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Women must actively not cause division.
1 Corinthians 1:10 ESV
10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.
Women must actively work for the Lord.
Colossians 1:10 ESV
10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Women are not to be spiritual passive but active in the church and the Bible is full of examples of women who understood this.
Phoebe - a servant of the church whom the apostle Paul greatly admired ().
Priscilla - a fellow worker with Paul and teacher with her husband (; ).
Dorcas/Tabitha - a woman full of good works and charitable deeds ().
Tryphaena & Tryphosa - Notice what Barns writes concerning these women ().
“These names, with the participle rendered “who labour,” are in the feminine gender, and these were probably two holy women...who ministered to the sick, and who with Persis, thus by example, and perhaps by instruction, laboured to promote the spread of Christianity. Pious females, then, as now, were able to do much in their proper sphere to extend the truths and blessings of the gospel.” 1

What are the limitations placed on women in the Bible?

Women are not to have any authority over men and thus be in leadership roles wherein men are found.
Women are not to have any authority over men and thus be in leadership roles wherein men are found.
The head of woman is man not woman.
1 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV
3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
Woman is to be in subjection to man not the other way around.
1 Timothy 2:11–12 ESV
11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
This is not a cultural thing but a creation thing.
1 Corinthians 11:7 ESV
7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.

That’s it, that is the only difference between men and women found in the Bible outside of physical differences.
Can women preach, teach, give communion, lead prayers or singing?
Yes, just not when men are present but in a setting wherein all women are found you bet they can.

What Specifically Can Women Do For The Church?

Women in public worship are expected by God to...

Assembly with everyone else to worship when the leadership prescribes the times to meet.
Hebrews 10:24–26 ESV
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. 26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
1 Corinthians 14:33 ESV
33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
1 Corinthians 14:23 NKJV
23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
Like men, women are expected to meet and worship at the prescribed times.
Women are expected to participate in every aspect of worship.
They are expect to partake of the Lord’s Supper ().
They are expected to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs ().
They are expected give as they prosper ().
They are expected to study God’s Word by way of the sermon ().
They are expected to pray with everyone else ().

Women in everyday life are expected by God to...

Edify and spiritually build up the brethren.
Ephesians 4:15–16 ESV
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Teach children, especially their own.
2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
2
Teach other women.
Titus 2:3–5 ESV
3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
Spread the gospel of Christ to the lost.
Acts 8:3–4 ESV
3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. 4 Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word.
Be good examples.
Matthew 5:16 ESV
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Host Bible studies in their homes.
1 Corinthians 16:19 ESV
19 The churches of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord.
Be benevolent.
Proverbs 31:20 ESV
20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.

God expects women to fill their God-given role they were created for whether it be while worshiping or other times for each of us has a role to play in the growth of the church ().
Albert Barnes, Notes on the New Testament: Romans, ed. Robert Frew (London: Blackie & Son, 1884–1885), 329.

Conclusion

When someone says the church does not value women simply tell them, God and those in the church that know God’s Word understand the value of women and know it could not survive without women.
The church was never intended to be without women because of all the value they bring to it, as the Proverb writer put it…“their worth is far above rubies.” ().
Invitation.
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
