After the trial, the crucifixion, His death…His burial

We are the point where this Christianity thing could have died… And everyone returned to their homes and fishing, carpentry, tentmaking, reconnecting with family, friends, business associates.
They had lost all hope, there was real fear…where they next. They had ALL abandoned the Lord and the people of The Way
Matthew 27:51–55 NIV
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.
Mt 27:51-55
Make a note…where were any of the 11, Judas had hung himself and he had yet to be replaced.
When it was done the curtain was torn
The earth shook…the tombs of MANY opened and where raised to life
The Centurion, the guard said, “Surely this was the Son of God.”
“Many women where there”…where were any of the 11?
He had died!!!
The disciples all had went there own way..As quickly and as quietly as possible.
Luke 23:27–28 NIV
A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.
The disciples all had went there own way..As quickly and as quietly as possible
Not one of the 11...
Luke 27
And yet by Grace others were there!
There were two non-disciple followers who were there
fear of death and association with Jesus
Simon from Cyrene, who carried Jesus cross when He could not longer
The thief on the cross…recognized Jesus as Lord and was rewarded with eternity.
“Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
Joseph of Arimathea who provided the tomb for Jesus
Matthew 27:57–61 NIV
As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
Mt 27.57-6
Still none of the 11...
I too have suffered what I thought was God abandoning me..
It was more than a trial, it shook my faith to the core. I was despondent, I was loosing my mind and loosing my faith.
I was sitting in the back of church and getting out as quickly as possible.
I did not want to associate myself with my brothers and sisters. I was not sure that my faith was going to survive this crisis.
A ministry path, that I had prepared for, I had invested in, I had prayed over, I had poured over, wept over… was suddenly gone, gone. By the hand of ones closet to me.
I ran away...
I hid...
I felt dead...
But that is not the end of Jesus story, the disciples story, or my story.
Why is that NOT the end of my story…I am standing here in front you…By the Grace of God, By His Mercy. When I had nearly lost my faith…He had it for me. By His Grace and Mercy He did not turn his back on me.
My personal “Friday” was there but He knew my personal “Sunday” was coming
By God’s Grace
We are disciples…where have we run away from Jesus.
The closet of the disciples argued who would be the greatest and Jesus said;
By God’s Grace
Matthew 16:24 NIV
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
Whoever is greatest must pick up his cross and follow me
Have we attempted to dull our minds with alcohol, porn or drugs?
THE TOMB COULD NOT HOLD HIM!
THE TOMB COULD NOT HOLD HIM!
THE TOMB COULD NOT HOLD HIM!
Luke 24:1–9 NIV
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
Luke 24:1–12 NIV

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Luke 24.
Luke 24.
HE IS RISEN!
HE IS RISEN!
HE IS RISEN!
Still…where were the 11
Luke 24:9–11 NIV
When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Followers of The Way were leaving Jerusalem heading back to their own villages…On the Road to Emmaus.
Luke 24:13–16 NIV
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.
Luke 24.13-
Jesus himself was there…He asked some questions, He was listening carefully to what was said…
He did not, cast them out of the Kingdom, He did not call a lightening bolt down on them…but he also was not happy.
Luke 24:25–27 NIV
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
Luke 24.25
Now let’s return to the disciples, the 11. Where were they, where had they gone?
They went into hiding…they withdrew, they checked out, they laid low
Jesus appeared to them…walking through closed and locked doors
Luke 24:45–49 NIV
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
Luke 24
I want to focus on one disciple…Peter. Some 230 times Peter is talked about in the New Testament
As the video that we kicked off with pointed out, Jesus had a special plan for Peter.
It all started with Peter in Luke 9
Luke 9:18–20 NIV
Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
Luke 9.18-
The Lord spoke of “Peter and the Disciples”
Jesus said
In the Garden of Gethsemane, The Lord had to step in and reattach an ear that Peter took a swipe at and cut it off.
Matthew 16:18 NIV
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Mt
On all of Peter, on all of his denials, on all of his temper tantrums, on all of his doubt and all of his fear, Christ will build his church on Peter.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, The Lord had to step in and reattach an ear that Peter took a swipe at and cut it off.
If Christ can you use Peter, the man that he was, he can use me, you and us together to build His church here in Sunnyside, in Central Washington, in the US and in the World!
Amen!!!
In the Garden of Gethsemane, The Lord had to step in and reattach an ear that Peter took a swipe at and cut it off.
At the trial, at the crucifixion had rejected Him, flat out denied that he even knew Him
Luke 22:60–62 NIV
Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Luke 22:
Not Once, Not Twice but Three times!!
Not Once, Not Twice but Three times!!
Only by God’s Grace and Mercy is Peter called to be a Rock!
You probably have a faith busting story like mine
You probably have shaken your fist at God and cried out “Why!”
You may have denied knowing Christ
You probably have hidden from God, hidden from his people, avoided contact with others.
You probably have doubted your that your circumstances are your alone and God is not apart of your life.
Friday was here…But Sunday came!!!
This is resurrection Sunday…Honor God’s Grace and Mercy that He has given you by “feeding His sheep”
Music
Benediction
Peter is called an Apostle
Peter gives Praise to God for a Living Hope
Peter, the Peter who denied the Christ calls us to be Holy
1 Peter 2:4–6 NIV
As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”
1 Peter 2:
Happy Easter! Happy Easter!!
He is Risen, He is Risen
He is Risen Indeed!!
