LAST WEEK

We took a look at the first 8 verses of
We looked at the benefits of being Jewish in this new community of Faith
We concluded that there is nothing in and of ourselves that we can do to match the righteousness of God.
We also concluded that the Beauty of the Gospel is not dependent on our faithfulness.
The Beautiful thing about the Character of the God we serve is in his desire to bless us even when we are faithless.

THIS WEEK

We are going to continue to see Paul confront Jewish Entitlement.
Paul is using
We are going to continue to see him establish new ways of seeing Faith.
New ways of seeing Community.
New ways of seeing ourselves in light of the Gospel.
TURN TO
Romans 3:9–31 NKJV
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. 10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” 13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

PRAY

Romans 3:9
Romans 3:9 NKJV
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.
SLIDE: WHO IS “WE” AND WHO ARE “THEY”?
We: Paul is speaking of the Jewish believers in Christ
They: Are the Gentile Believers in Christ
Why is Paul even talking about this?
Remember, a huge reason for writing this letter was to bring unity between the Gentile and Jewish Believers
Because of the Jewish Expulsion by Emperor Claudius in 49AD
And the subsequent Jewish invasion after his death in 54AD
There was drama in Rome
So how does this relate to us?
Church in order for us to prevent an “US VS THEM” Mentality
We have to look at what Paul is saying and value it
In God’s Kingdom, one race is not greater than another.
It’s sad that some denominations see themselves as Elite in the Kingdom
It’s sad when we divide over the smallest differences at the expense of the greatest thing we have in common
One thing that the Bible Preaches is this, that “We are all ONE in Christ.”
Galatians 3:28 NKJV
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
The problem in Rome was that they couldn’t fellowship with one another because of their Past, and because of their culture
WHAT IS THE MOST OBVIOUS THING
A lot of the times we look at other Churches, other congregations, other Christians, and all that stands out to us is their faults, or where they might be wrong
That has to change
This is the mentality that Paul is confronting in Romans.
Sometimes, it seems like we are all in our little worlds
We congregate and then we segregate
This is not the definition of Church
My friend once said, “Church is a people who, not a place where.”
SLIDE: SO WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE IN REAL TIME?
SLIDE: John the Apostle said it best in
1 John 1:7 NKJV
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
SLIDE: IN ORDER FOR US TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP, WE MUST TOGETHER, WALK IN THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL.
IN ORDER FOR US TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP, WE MUST TOGETHER, WALK IN THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL.
We must learn to walk together in the Light
To allow the illuminating characteristics of Jesus to impact us as a whole
Why?
No matter what our background
No matter what type of home we grew up in
No matter our cultural upbringing
We are all sinners in need of a Savior
That’s what we have in common.
That’s the fellowship we have with one another.
WE ARE IN DYER NEED OF JESUS.
THERE IS NOT ONE POINT IN YOUR LIFE, WHERE YOU HAVEN’T NEED OF WHAT JESUS HAS TO OFFER.
ASK: TURN TO SOMEONE AND TELL THEM “THOUGH YOU ARE A SINNER, I STILL LOVE YOU!”
Romans 3:10-
Church before we give up on people we must see ourselves as the needy.
Before we give up on the sinner, remember that you want to be like Jesus, and Jesus loves the Sinner.
What should we expect from people without Jesus?
Romans 3:10–18 NKJV
10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” 13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
CHURCH THIS IS WHAT WE CAN EXPECT WHEN WE LIVE APART FROM CHRIST
APART FROM CHRIST
THERE IS NO RIGHTEOUSNESS
THERE IS NO UNDERSTANDING
THERE IS NO SEEKING AFTER GOD
WE ALL TURN ASIDE
WE ALL BECOME UNPROFITABLE
WE DON’T DO GOOD
OUR MOUTHS SMELL OF THE DEATH WE PROCLAIM OVER OURSELVES AND OTHERS
OUR TONGUES SPEAK LIES
WE CURSE AND COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR OWN BITTERNESS
OUR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD
WE ARE RESTLESS, WITHOUT PEACE
WE DON’T FEAR GOD
THOUGH THIS IS THE NORM FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE
Why are some of these things active in the life of a Christian?
This is why Paul is bringing this up
BOTH THE SAVED AND THE UNSAVED STRUGGLE WITH THE SYMPTOMS OF SIN
BOTH THE JEW AND THE GENTILE STRUGGLE IN THIS WAY
BOTH THE CHURCHED AND THE UNCHURCHED STRUGGLE IN THIS WAY
We all struggle in these areas
We all fall short of the glory of God
Apart from Christ, we are cursed under the law
Romans 3:
Romans 3:19–20 NKJV
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
TO THOSE WHO STRUGGLE IN THESE AREAS
One thing we must realize is this:
None of us have the capacity to pay the debt of our shortcomings.
None of our righteous deeds could ever equate nor put us in the positive of our spiritual worth.
Not one of us can plead our case, for the law condemns us all
Not one of us can plead our case, for the law condemns us all
CHURCH, AS WE LOOK AT THE LAW, AND OUR FAILURE TO KEEP IT
WE ARE SILENCED
WE ALL STAND GUILTY
BUT LET’S SAY YOU TRIED TO BE JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW . . .
WHAT WILL THAT BRING?
YOU MAY FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF
BUT ONLY UNTIL YOU BREAK THE LAW ONCE AGAIN
DOES THIS MEAN THE LAW HAS THE FINAL SAY?
IF WE ARE GUILTY ACCORDING TO THE LAW, WHERE IS OUR HOPE?
The Law was meant to convict you
The Law was meant to convict you
The Law was meant for you to know what Sin is
The Law is Sin’s Spokesperson
Though this could leave us defeated
That’s not where the story ends.
THOUGH PAUL HAD BEEN BLAMELESS FOR A SEASON OF HIS LIFE
HE KNEW FIRSTHAND THAT HIS RIGHTEOUS DEEDS COULD NOT JUSTIFY HIS FLESH.
HE KNEW THAT THE BEST DAY HE HAD UNDER THE LAW, STILL DECLARED THAT HE NEEDED A “FOREVER GOD”
Romans 3:21–26 NKJV
IT IS WHEN THE LAW SEPARATED US FROM GOD
THAT GOD DECIDED TO REVEAL HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
NOT IN IGNORANCE OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS
BUT TO FULFILL THE CRY OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS
That through Faith in Jesus Christ
To all and on all who Believe
SALVATION FOR THE SINNNER
No one is exempt
No one is cast out
There is no difference
Everyone who has sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God has the opportunity to be made new in Christ.
How is this possible?
CHURCH, THE MESSAGE OF ROMANS IS TWO FOLD, THAT GOD IS ABLE TO SAVE
AND THAT WE ARE MADE RIGHTEOUS THROUGH ONE MAN, THE MAN CHRIST JESUS
We have been justified FREELY
Financially, it doesn’t cost us anything
We cannot purchase what God gave so freely.
The One act of Christ PAID IN FULL for the infinite sins of man.
Through Jesus we are MADE RIGHT . . FOREVER.
This is the Grace that He has shown us
By this Grace we are justified via the Redeeming Blood of Christ Jesus
Whom God the Father sent forth as Full & Final Payment for Sin.
Isn’t that crazy, that God held himself accountable for the sin of the World?
Why Tho?
To demonstrate His Righteousness
To put on display how Good He is
In times past, he passed over the sins of the people
As the Passover sacrifice and its blood spoke on their behalf
Their obedience to His word spoke on their behalf.
But now, it is Jesus’ final Word and His Obedience that speaks on our behalf.
That our works wouldn’t Justify us
That would be burdensome
But in Christ, his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
That brings freedom
That makes Him Just
That makes Him the justified of those who put their faith in Christ.
This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:27–31 NKJV
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.
SO WHERE IS OUR BOASTING?
WHAT HAVE WE DONE, THAT WE CAN PRIDE OURSELVES IN?
CHURCH, NEITHER THE BLESSINGS THAT WE RECEIVE, NOR THE SALVATION THAT WE CELEBRATE IS OURS TO BOAST OF
FOR WE DID NOTHING TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT JESUS ACCOMPLISHED
NEITHER THE LAW
NOR OUR WORKS
NOTHING CAN EVER EQUATE TO THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST SHED ON BEHALF OF SINFUL MAN.
FOR THE BELIEVER WE ARE UNDER A NEW LAW.
A LAW OF FAITH.
When it comes to our justification
Paul clearly says
That we are justified by Faith in what Jesus has done
It is purely the work of Jesus that Justifies us
Apart from the deeds of the law.
NOW, THIS GOD, WHO IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER GOD IN THE UNIVERSE
IS HE THE GOD OF THE JEWS ONLY?
IS HE NOT ALSO THE GOD OF THE GENTILES?
Romans 3:29 KJV 1900
29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
YES THE GOD OF THE GENTILES ALSO.
NOW THERE IS ONE GOD
ONE WHO IS JUST AND A JUSTIFIER OF THE ONE WHO HAS FAITH IN CHRIST
HE WILL JUSTIFY BOTH THE CIRCUMCIZED AND THE UNCIRCUMCIZED THROOUGH FAITH IN CHRIST
NOW, DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN IGNORE THE LAW?
DOES THIS MEAN THE LAW HAS NO VALUE ANYMORE?
OF COURSE NOT.
IN FACT, OUR FAITH IN CHRIST SHOULD TRANSFORM US INTO HIS IMAGE
AS WE LILVE OUT THIS FAITH, WE WILL NATURALLY ESTABLISH THE LAW.
JESUS MADE IT SIMPLE FOR US.
Matthew 22:34–40 NKJV
34 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
