Introduction
Recap of Series…
Written by John Mark
Went with Paul in Barnabas on missionary journey, only to leave and cause a division among them (See Acts)
Served with Peter as he went a preached the gospel
that is where most of this book came from; the sermons and messages of Peter
His parents owned what is called the “upper room” where Jesus and his disciples had what is known as the last supper.
This book was written to gentile believers in Rome.
we see in several places that the jewish customs are explained in a little more detail
yet today, as we look in chapters 14 & 15, there is a 20 verse stretch where the word crucify is used, without explanation.
They knew what it meant.
Today - Exposed
The truth of Jesus and his cross exposes the truth about humanity.
Use Adam and Eve as illustration
while living in perfection, the Bible says they were naked, and not ashamed.
Once they had sinned, the Bible says that they were naked and ashamed.
with sin, comes shame… we can try to hide is like Adam and Eve
But with the cross of Christ, no matter how well we hide our sin, it becomes exposed
61 But he kept silent and did not answer.
Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”,as
61 But he kept silent and did not answer.

Jesus makes a declaration in this passage that he has not really done publically until now.
he has kept the messianic secret to keep the people from trying to force him into a position of what they believe the messiah is supposed to be.
Now, the time is right for the truth to be proclaimed.
Before and after this declaration we see what humanity is like… and we see what Jesus is truly like.
Pray at the end of the introduction...
The Pride of Man
Have you ever thought about how airogant we really are?
Maybe an extreme example, but every time that we start our day, or do anything without consulting with the Father, we are basically saying, “I do not need you today.”
I am strong enough, good enough, look good and dog gone it, people like me!
yet most of us do not really think that, if I were to ask,
yet that is exactly what we live out.
Ever since man was created, we have been spitting in the face of God, thinking that there is something better out there because of our dissatisfaction with this world.
I mean, mankind, through their sin, have been destroying everything that God has created
Only to turn and blame him
we look for other gods, we worship ourselves or simply say he isn’t really there at all.
Before the Declaration - The Apostles… not even the disciples, understand the difference
The Apostles at the Last Supper
Explain all that took place…
washing of the feet; last supper; declaration that one would betray him
At the end of the meal, all were proclaiming that they would never leave him, they would die if they have to
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written:
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.,ay
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”
29 Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.”
And they all said the same thing.
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.”
And they all said the same thing.
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away, because it is written:
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.,ay
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”
You know they story…
29 Peter told him, “Even if everyone falls away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.”
And they all said the same thing.
31 But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.”
And they all said the same thing.
The Apostles in the Garden of Gethsemane
Jesus goes to prayer.... we will look at that more later,
the apostles go to sleep.
I could spend an entire sermon on this part alone…
they just had a big meal, they had some teaching, it has been a long week, they are looking forward to the sabbath so they can rest.
Jesus spends hours praying to the father for this “cup” to pass
if you read the OT you learn that a lot of places, the word cup is used to speak of the wrath of God, or pour out the wrath of God.
Jesus is praying anyway that this cup, your wrath can not come on him that night.
but more than
All scatter… even young Mark
Jesus is betrayed, the disciples, the apostles and everyone runs!
young Mark, would rather run back home naked, than to stay there and be associated with Jesus.
Peter’s denial
Peter simply does, just a short time what he swore he would never do… even if it would cost his life.
Now, he is swearing and cursing people just for saying that he was a follower.
After the Declaration
The Sanhedrin
immediately proclaimed that he needed to die
this was what is meant by saying that he was blaspheming…
Blaspheme = speak irreverently about God or sacred things
he is claiming to be God…
There was no investigation, is this really the messiah, no checking with scripture.
yet even those that would testify on his behalf, are now running and denying that they were with him.
while on the cross
let him save himself…
31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself!
32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.”
Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.
Why are we constantly needing signs that God is who he says he is.
The soldiers
mocking him - Tell of how they spit on him, a crown of thorns, put a purple robe on him and paid homage to him
this is the one that I feel like we can relate to the most…
