CTS: The hope of the future glory with Christ gives us strength and assurance in today’s storms.
Romans 8:18–30 ESV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

1. Creation hopes for future redemption.

Romans 8:18–22 ESV
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

A. Creation hopes for the revealing of the sons of God. (v. 19)

Romans 8:19
Romans 8:19 ESV
19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.
Important truth: There is a person in history that will be last to receive Christ before the end times. It will be then that God will reveal the sons of God, his children and will redeem the world.
Transition:

B. Creation hopes for its release from corruption. (vv. 20-22)

Romans 8:20–22 ESV
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

2. Christians hope for future glory.

Romans 8:23–25 ESV
23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
(

A. Christians suffer while waiting for future glory. (v. 23)

Romans 8:23 ESV
23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

B. Christians wait patiently for future glory. (vv. 24-25)

Romans 8:24–25 ESV
24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

3. The Holy Spirit provides hope for future sanctification.

(
Romans 8:26–27 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

A. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us. (v. 26)

Romans 8:26 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Intercedes: Speaks on behalf of us. Thus, the Holy Spirit takes it upon himself to cry out on our behalf of the injustices of this world.
Transition

B. The Holy Spirit prays for us. (v. 26-27)

Romans 8:27 ESV
27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Part of this groaning is praying to God about our needs
The Spirit asks for things we don’t know we need.
The Spirit cries out about the suffering we face.
The Spirit always has his prayers answered yes.
We need to give the Spirit the freedom needed to change our hearts, minds, and prayer life so we are praying what he is praying. Even if we don’t do that the Spirit will remain faithful to pray for us.

4. Christians have hope in the future good.

Romans 8:28–30 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

A. God works all things for Good. (v. 28)

Romans 8:28 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Two Requirements:
- We must Love God
- We must be Called by God

B. God is sovereign over our salvation and sanctification. (vv. 29-30)

Romans 8:29–30 ESV
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

God foreknew us.

God knew us intimately before we were born. Look at what the Psalmist writes,
Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” God predestined us. He predetermined us to be made into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Thus, all we go through God permitted in his sovereign reign so that we might be more like Christ through it. God called us. We have been called to be followers of Christ. , tells us that “44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.” Thus, we rest assured since God foreknew us, predestined us to his likeness, he also has drawn and called us to himself. God justified us. Those whom the Lord calls, predestines and foreknows, he also justifies. This means he makes us innocent before him. There is nothing in us that is unredeemable for the Lord has called us unto salvation and we have received his gift of justification. God glorified us. Wow, God has given us his glory so we might shine more glory on him. What a powerful reminder that we are the cherished and loved of God.
Psalm 139:16 ESV
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
Maybe the CSB will help make better sense of what is saying, it reads:
Psalm 139:16 CSB
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.

 God predestined us.

He predetermined us that he foreknew to be made into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Thus, all we go through God permits in his sovereign reign so that we might be more like Christ through it. Yes, that means even the results of wickedness in the world and suffering God uses to bring us closer to himself and the likeness of Christ.

God called us.

We have been called to be followers of Christ. , tells us that
John 6:44 ESV
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
Thus, we rest assured since God foreknew us, predestined us to his likeness, he also has drawn and called us to himself.

God justified us.

Those whom the Lord calls, predestines, and foreknows, he also justifies. This means he makes us innocent before him. There is nothing in us that is unredeemable for the Lord has called us unto salvation and we have received his gift of justification. Thus, we are found to be blameless!

God glorified us.

Wow, God has given us his glory so we might shine more glory on him. What a powerful reminder that we are the cherished and loved of God whom God dwells within!
