Opening Remarks

The first time I met Ulyana and Pete, it was after a worship service, and Ulyana told me that they had been visiting many churches and were unsatisfied. She said that they couldn’t find a pastor that taught the Bible like John McArther. I thought: Oh goodness, there is no way I will every see them again—if John McArther is her standard for Bible Teaching.
Ulyana’s faith and the faith of her family was part of the reason they moved to the states. Uzbekistan is primarily a Muslim country.
When Pete met Ulyana, they were in Iraq. He was a contractor; she volunteered to serve our country in Iraq. She was a driver for a human intelligence team, serving in the U.S. military.
Tv at the end of the hall…only Arabic channels or you could play a movie.
Pete would see her…Pretty girl cleaning a gun…Who wouldn’t want to see what that was about
She was watching the Passion of Christ…it was her birthday.
Pete gave her a 256MB thumb drive...
Their courtship was more of a process of friends hanging out...First movie they watched together…she brought the movie, Enemy at the Gates. It is about an American sniper and a Russian Sniper…the Russian Sniper won.
The last movie they watched was Aqua-man when he started speaking in Russian, she said: he has a horrible accent.
They had fun together and enjoyed the privilege of working together in the FBI. They got married and on their honeymoon they bought a rubber duck:
They would hid it in all kinds of places including the office so that the other person would find it…it was a fun way to let each other know that they were thinking about each other.
In her work she had fun, but she took her job very seriously. She was a remarkable researcher. She paid attention to detail and provided consistent quality information about cases.
She was really talented at a lot of things. She loved gardening and was good at it. She was an amazing pianist.
Ulyana liked to do things that she had never done before. One time they decided to stay in a bed and breakfast, because they had never done that before.
On a bay on The Atlantic, during the winter, very cold.
Radiator with note that says don’t turn on high it will blow a fuse.
In the morning, there was no hot water for a shower.
Bed and breakfast, became a joke, she had a postcard of the bed and breakfast and she framed it.
She loved animals—especially dogs.
They had to put their Boston Terrier, Lucy, two Julys ago.

They had to put their Boston Terrier two Julys ago.
She bought a stuffed animal (Boston Terrier), and she carried the stuffed dog in her purse, be cause she loved Lucy.
As Pete was sorting through things over the last week, he found a piece of paper that written a list of words on that described his wife. I think this list he wrote pretty much sums up Ulyana’s character:
Faith
Loyal
Intelligent
Compassionate
Smart
humble
Creative
successful
loving
genuine
Hard working
patient
Peaceful
Loved God
Research —very good at it.

Obituary

Ulyana Hennemann age 44, of Slayden, MS passed away on March 29, 2019. Ulyana was born March 25, 1975 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan to Mira and Viktor Ogorodnikova. Ulyana was a graduate of Baptist Bible College. Ulyana is survived by her sisters Evelina and Tatyana, and her father Viktor and mother Mira.
Ulyana was loved dearly by all who knew her and will be missed very much.
We are going to watch a brief portion of Russian concert pianist, Sergey Kuznetsov, playing Haydn’s piano sanata in e minor. One night while Ulyana was over at our house, she sat down to our piano and started playing this for memory. She didn’t play the whole thing, but she played enough of it to wow us with her musical skill. This was a piece she was very fond of playing.

There is a difference between religion and sincere faith

Philippians 1:21–25 CSB
21 For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don’t know which one I should choose. 23 I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ—which is far better— 24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25 Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
Phil
It was important to Ulyana to work through and maintain God’s perspective on our lives.
The Bible says that our life is just a vapor. God has promised that after our life on this earth is over, for all who have submitted by faith to Jesus Christ will enjoy the reward of eternal life with Him in Heaven. For those who have rejected Christ, God promises eternal separation from Him in a place called hell.
A proper perspective on life and death for the believer produces a great hope and a longing for the day we are relieved of the troubles of this life and enter into the promise of God. Religion focuses on making life better now. Sincere faith in Jesus Christ longs for the peace that God promises for eternity.
As we consider these passages that were important to Ulyana, we should consider this perspective as well. Are we going through religious motions, or do we really believe what God has promised? Are we longing for eternal life with Christ in Heaven?

There is a righteousness that is false and a righteousness that is true

Philippians 3:9 CSB
9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God based on faith.
Sincere faith in Christ makes a distinction between false righteousness and true righteousness.
The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
This verse reminds us that our right-standing with God is not based on our compliance with religious regulations, but on our submission to Christ.
The Bible says that Jesus died on the cross so that we could be forgiven of our sin, that He rose from the grave on the third day to demonstrate His power to keep His promises, and that He will return one day to hold everyone accountable for their faith in Him.
I believe Ulyana had this verse posted on the wall to remind her that her faith in Jesus was what established her right-standing with God.

There is a correct view of Christ and there is a false view of Christ.

2 Corinthians 12:9–10 CSB
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Cor
To some people Jesus Christ was an interesting teacher.
To others, He is more of a genie in a bottle that they call on when they need something.
To some, He is a vindictive dictator ready to strike them down at the first mistake.
However, this verse reminds us of the mercy and grace of Christ toward those who believe.
Those who have sincere faith in Christ, are always aware of their own inadequacies—their weaknesses. They live in the awareness that the goal of life is not becoming the kind of person that Jesus is impressed with because they are so amazing. The goal of life is to be the kind of person that is simply amazed at Jesus, because He died for us while we were still sinners.

Conclusion

These three passages were important to Ulyana. Let’s consider them today as we remember her life.
Are we going through religious motions, or do we have sincere faith?
Are we simply trying to be good people, or are we focused on submitting to Christ?
Are we living our lives to make much of Jesus, or are we trying to become great people?
One particular person who worked closely with Ulyana, said: Ulyan was a gentle soul. This is the mark of faith. May the same be said of all of us.
