Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
Clap your hands, all peoples!
Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
This is Bob Kauflin’s outline.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles
Caveat: I’m talking about so-called Christian songs, not secular songs.

Singing Helps us Remember God’s Word.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ().
What we sing should fill our hearts with the word of Christ.
“Word of Christ” probably is a reference to the gospel.
Some Scripture filled children’s songs
, Do everything without complaining. Do everything without arguing. So that you may become blameless and pure children of God.
, God loves a cheerful giver (ha ha ha ha ha). Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. Whoever sows generously will also reap generously (ha ha ha ha ha!).
Sad fact: nearly all Scripture filled songs are considered “children’s songs.”
We need to sing songs that are grounded in Scripture and reflect the truth of Scripture.
The songs we sing should be about God, not about us.

The Comeback (Danny Gokey)
After a season of night falls and push backs After the heartache of wrong turns and sidetracks Just when they think they've got you game set match Here comes the comeback Just cause you lay low got up slow unsteady Don't mean you blacked out or bought out you're ready Just when they think there's nothing left running on empty Here comes the comeback
This is your time your moment The fire the fight your golden You've come so far keep going Oh here comes the comeback
I’ll Fly Away, #601
If there’s not a clear reference to God, the Scripture, salvation, man’s sin, etc, then it’s not really a Christian song. It’s a pick-me-up.
For years God’s people sang the Psalms.
Truth in song stays long.

Singing Helps us Respond to God’s Grace.

“With thankfulness in your heart to God.”
Emotionless singing makes no sense.
David “danced with all his might” ().
Singing is a gift God has given us that enables us to respond to His goodness in our lives.
Illustration: “There’s an app for that.”
5. “There’s a Song for That.”
Application: “There’s a song for that.”
Joy! / “I have a song that Jesus gave me… (In my heart there rings a melody)”
Application: “There’s a song for that.”
Sadness / “It Is Well,” “O Come, O Come Emmanuel!”
Repentance / “I’ve wandered far away from God”
Victory in God / “In Christ Alone, my hope is found. He is my light, my strength, my song.”
6. Singing is a way we respond to God’s Grace.
7. Singing, and not merely hearing a song, is the vehicle.

Singing Helps us Reflect God’s Glory.

The songs we sing should be about God, not about us.

When we sing about us, we’re reflecting our own glory. That’s a perversion of the purpose of singing.
If there’s not a clear reference to God, the Scripture, salvation, man’s sin, etc, then it’s not really a Christian song. It’s a pick-me-up.
We’ve inverted how we choose the music we sing. The tune is primary while the words are secondary. This is backwards.
The songs we sing should be about God.

Applications

Do you have reason to sing?
If you aren’t saved, you really don’t.
If you are saved, you sure do!
