Samson 3

Judges 14:1–4 NASB95
1 Then Samson went down to Timnah and saw a woman in Timnah, one of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 So he came back and told his father and mother, “I saw a woman in Timnah, one of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife.” 3 Then his father and his mother said to him, “Is there no woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she looks good to me.” 4 However, his father and mother did not know that it was of the Lord, for He was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.

1 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife. 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well. 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
Timnath was about 3 miles south of Samson’s home town. It belonged to the tribe of Dan (12 tribes of Israel) But at the time it was inhabited and controlled of the Philistines Israels enemy and oppressor.
a. Samson is on a romantic pursuit, one that will not turn out too good for him.
b. Samson’s actions were bad from start to finish.
2. Samson’s choice in a wife was determines primary in what he was. VS 1 “He went down to Timnath and SAW a Philistine woman.
VS 2 “He told his mother and father what he had seen” A women and he wanted her to be his wife.
a. She was attractive to the eye and that was all that mattered to Samson.
VS 3 “She pleaseth me well” KJV
NASB “Get her for me, for she looks good to me” That is what determined his pursuit of her romantically. (We will look at this next week, but he also liked what she had to say. VS 7
b. But is was sight that was the real determining factor in wanted her to be his wife.
2. What someone sees is a factor today when it comes to romance.
a. The devil will use this to temp Godly people to ungodly people. It happen to guys and girls.
b. Outward beauty is a strong attraction that led to Samson’s failure and many other today.
c. Temptation through the eyes is an effective way for Satan to get a Christian to fail.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

d. We have to be careful on putting to much emphasis on looks.
e. Beauty is not a sin in itself, but outward beauty must never take precedence over inward beauty,
f. How many marriage have failed over this?
THE DISOBEDIENCE IN THE PURSUIT.
In pursuing a Philistine girl Samson was disobedient to two ways. God’s law for an Israelite, and also as a Nazarite.
Disobedience for an Israelite:
God made is very plan to His people that they were not to obtain wives from the idolatrous people (idol worshipers) of the land.
a. Samson seeking a wife of the Philistines was wrong. It was an obvious violation of the law of God for the Israelites.
DISOBEDIENCE FOR A NAZARITE.
In pursuing this Philistine woman Samson also disobeyed the laws of a Nazarite.
Numbers 6:2 NASB95
2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to dedicate himself to the Lord,

a. The whole idea of being a Nazarite was “to separate themselves unto the Lord”
b. This separation would enable him to serve more and was a reminder of his faithfulness to God.
c, In pursuing this woman was not separating from but mixing with the unclean and unholy. What Samson was doing would greatly render his serve.
The disrespect in the pursuit.
Samson showed much disrespect to his parents wise counsel regarding his proposed marriage. VS 2
a. His protested but he paid no attention to their wise counsel. VS 3
b. In Samson’s day a boy did not go ask a girl to marry him, his parents would go to her parents.
c. Samson could not marry her unless his parents made the marriage proposal. What he was doing to great disrespect.
The protest about the romance
VS 3,5
Samson’s parents protest the marriage . It was both a wise protest and a weak protest.
Wise protest:
a. Wise is position: Their protest was a wise position because it supported the position of God’s law. Samson’s parents understood God’s word, and that it was wrong to marry into the pagans.
b. Wise in reasoning: Protest against something that goes against God’s word is always good. Samson’s parents tries to reason with him.
c. Wise in language: They used some pretty strong language. VS 3 uncircumcised. This was a term of reproach and contempt. Calling them who they were.
2. A weak protest:
Samson’s parents did not protest strongly enough. They argued against the sin, but they went along with it.
a. They opposed with their talk, but not by their walk.
C. The plan for the romance.

4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
God never wants any of his children to go outside of His will. But He will use any situation to do His will.
a. Gods plan was for Israel to concur the Philistines. Samson would be used, never when he was disobedient. But it he would pay the price.
b. Regardless of the fact that God will use evil to accomplish good things, does not justify evil.
