Good morning. What an idiot such a pretty spring day out there and so nice. I don't know man. Winter's really holding on. I don't know why sometimes bad things happen to good people. I guess that's why well now that's my transition into today's talk. Actually. There was a book that came out I guess maybe what in the 80s Harold Kushner no relation to Donald Trump and his people but at any rate Rabbi who wrote the book when bad things happen to good people and that, you know trying to struggle with this thing is a fancy $3 word for it's the Odyssey where we try to and people who seem like they're kind of them and certainly we have our own personal experience of this here in this church with Richard and K and everything. They've been going through and we ask ourselves why why do bad things happen to good people if there is some sort of a personal being up there Sky who? Seems to have control over outcomes then. Why would there be right why would people suffer and that is something that we've been wrestling with for some time in the Bible in the book of Jobe in entire 42 chapter book is devoted to this concept, isn't it that here's this guy and was the right of way and he's not the best in the west but he was the best in the East anyway, and so these people his friends coming and they his wife says Curse God and die and he has his friends come and they explained to him that he's obviously a horrible human being and because these things have happened and the wandering really complain to God and let you know what I'd like that because there's a degree to which God can handle it, you know, and it's okay for us to complain and at the same time. We have to realize that we're not. You know, we don't have the respective and so the book God introduces himself. He kind of comes and encounters Joe personally and and he shows Jobe who he is and how job is so small by comparison and then Jobe replies to the I know that you can do all things. No purpose of yours can be thwarted you asked who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge surely. I spoke of things. I did not understand things too wonderful for me to know and so Jehovah saying, you know, I have a very small perspective. He's admitting that I used to think that life was about me. I thought it was about me and my kids out my little corner of the world and when my corner of the world fell apart, I thought the world was coming to an end and then he encountered this being who who showed him a much. Water picture that that God shows up and says, you know what your world is very small and you are very small and what you consider good is not necessarily good and what you consider bad is not necessarily bad because you don't know the plan and so Joseph. I don't know the plan now, I see that now right? He says you said listen now, I will speak I will call you and you shall answer me my ears had heard of you. But now my eyes have seen you therefore. I despise myself and repent in dust and Ashes there something about an encounter with God that results in that nobody ever encounters God and say and says, hey there you are. I know that I've been wanting to see you, you know, you got some things to answer for But then encounter with the holy God always leaves Humanity really crumbled and crumpled pan at his feet that he is his nature is such that there's no place for that anymore. And so we see that with Joe been yet for us who have not most of us had some sort of face-to-face encounter with God through hard times. But when we personally are going through but things that are very difficult and perhaps for a long. Of time. It's still leaves us wondering you know, this I'm God and you're not doesn't Minister a whole lot of comfort to us in those times. SoJO is there and it's an answer but it seems like it's an incomplete answer at least for how we deal with it and how it can be accessed by us. The Hebrews the Jews this this judeo-christian tradition. They're not the only ones that wondered why do bad things happen in Plato's Republic Socrates is having a series of conversations with his young acolytes and and they're challenging him on this idea of justice and they're saying that why should someone be good? Is there a reason to be good? Maybe it's better to be bad. Right? And so one of his inquisitors sister says to him this he says first of all mankind is always declaring that Justice and virtue are honorable. But Grievous in 12 CM. All right, and that the pleasures of vice and Injustice are easy of attainment and are only censured by law and opinion. Do we get that that it's it's fun to do what's wrong and it's been it's unpleasant to do what's right often times. Do we get that and any other reason people ride is going to be punished or whatever it is. They also they say also that honesty is for the most part less profitable than dishonesty. There are people in Washington DC who would agree with that and he says they're quite ready to call wicked men happy and to honor them both in public and private when they are rich in any other way influential ride, you ever watch a movie stars think that people want to know what they think that's like, did you accomplish something just because you can act like somebody else or you somehow an expert and yet it doesn't matter who they are or what they are. We pay attention to what they say because things seem to have gone well for them, right and any says that that week we do that and it says while they despised and Overlook those who may be weak and poor even though acknowledging them to be better than others. But most extraordinary of all this is what I really want you to perk up it is their motive speaking about virtue and the Gods. They say that the gods apportion Calamity and misery too many good men. And good and happiness to the wicked. You see how they struggled to. That but yeah, we see that sometimes that nice guys finish last at you know, that the good guys are the losers and all of that we see that don't we use but if there's some sort of transcendent reality where there are is a being or beings above us. When is it the good people often suffer from calamities and that bad people often flourish and Thrive and and endure and so even back then they wondered and Socrates goes about him and that their point is to say why don't we just appear just but really the end in unjust and so ironically Socrates himself.

Try to get the Greeks in his day to be virtuous people. He really did want there to be everybody to be happier and need to be better was sentenced to death and executed through poisoning. And so this is a portrait that event and so you know, what good is it to be good right nice guys finish last by Socrates at the end of the Republic. He says that he talks first of all, he talks about this which is interesting and he says have what? You know, what we when we do good we are investing in our souls and our souls will endure and that's the thing 2 worth having right Socrates says this then this must be our notion of the just man that even when he is in poverty or sickness or any other seeming Misfortune all things will in the end work together for good to him. in life and death

for the gods have a care of anyone Whose desire is to become just and to be like God as far as man can attain the Divine likeness by pursuit of virtue. Does that sound familiar? Keep in mind this is 300 years before Jesus.

Paul said it like this and we know that for those who love God all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose. See God has left the Gentiles, I had he said there was some sort of an awareness of a flame that was flickering and Socrates stumbled into it. Now Paul who's writing to an informed Greco-Roman audience. This is really drawing from Plato forties through Plato to say all things work together for good.

And so this morning here's the big ideas that God has called his people to Triumph through hardship for good.

So the first thing I want to observe as we get into Romans 8:28 through 39 is it God has called his people that in this big idea. I really want to emphasize that he is he's done. He's at he's invited it's not everybody but there are some who are called and sew in Romans 8:28 just reiterating that when we know that all things work together for good to those who love God and he says to those who are called according to his purpose. Okay, and this is really the keynote for everything that follows. You can just kind of keep 828 open and look back at it. And so there's this set of people, you know, sometimes bad things are just bad. But there's a set of people that the mass of the world when bad things happen if they're just bad thing. But then there's other side of people who are called. According to God's purpose God is called everybody. It's a special set saying I want to notices we've been or when we asked who are these people now before Jesus came those called people were the Hebrews aren't they those who were who came from Abraham and to work observant of the law of Moses? And so those were the ones they were circumcised you could tell the difference, but Paul had said all the way back now we keep everything in context that early on God has redrawn the lights. It's not those who were circumcised physically but those who are circumsized in their heart. They circumcise Hearts As Romans 2:29 set know a person is a Jew who is one inwardly and circumcision is circumcision of the Heart by the spirit not by the written code such a person's pray not for other people, but from God, there's this interchange that now distinguishes God's people from those who are the called from the not call that we get that and that it's those people whose Hearts have been circumcised. For whom all things work together for good? Okay, even though they go through trial. So that's the first thing I want to notice from that is is that that God hasn't called people in. Those are the ones who are circumcised in heart. So we're going to have to ask our little what is that mean? I mean, I believe that it is his love cuz notice he says hear those who love God this isn't saying that there's some people who aspire to a love for God and that they are worthy and we're going to see that it's really not about worth. It's not about your worth. Is that about your performance or my performance? It's not about our place or station are birth. It's about God's mercy. I'm going to see that when we get over in chapter 9, but it's those who love God that it's not remember Socrates says it's for those who are pursuing virtue. Now, that's a meritorious system right at bettola show that when people pursue virtue they that there's evil trying to It's haunting them right and work. And Socrates says as much as we can, you know, so we're all in a relative Spector. Nobody knows if they are part of God's in her skull under Socrates, but Christ, he says to those who love God, that's how we know. And it's not because we have somehow aspire to something. It is his Spirit 8 in Roman i v e says and hope does not put us to shame because God's love has been poured into our hearts did the Holy Spirit has been given to us that God has has done is he has put this Watermark honest he has distinguished us from the World by giving us his Holy Spirit and that Holy Spirit has now inspired a love for God within us is the circumcision of our hearts. The goddess called his people I want us to notice that God has called his people. So do God has called his people God has called his people by just any call right? It's not some cabal of of a spiritually enlightened people tie. It's a being that we cannot really understand and never will who is called his people and so when we get over into Romans 8:29, we start to see that this was something that transcends human ability ride. It says for those he whom he foreknew. He also predestined. I want us to take a little aside right now just for the sake of a couple of you who are theology Geeks and for the sake of just preparing you if you run into this mindset because it's on the rise, if this idea it's called reformed theology and reformed theology says that God picked everybody out if ants then you can do about it. And that if he chose you to go all you're going to hell tells you to go to heaven you're going to heaven. It's also called Calvinism, right? So here's John Calvin Harris what he said? No one wishes to be thought religious dares simply deny predestination by which God adopt to Hope of life and sent to Eternal death. So he's saying if you're really as if you claim to be serious about God, you can't ignore this idea somehow before all creation in His Infinite Wisdom because of just his own choice without any reference to what anybody does decided that Sarah and Julie and Bob and Jessie and Bill would go to heaven and that Sue and Mary and Philip and Joe would go to hell. That's Calvinism. And that no matter what any of those do that, they will not change that desk. Okay, I want to because that is it that idea is on the rise and you might recall from it immediately or you might believe it and that's fine except it's just not true. You know, I mean God has the right to do that. I mean by virtue of the fact that he's God if he wants to do that praise His name. I'm not here to critique what to do. It's just a fruit. That's the only problem with it. Okay. So here's the thing is is that when Paul said that they were predestined right that he predestined? He's not claiming some secret insight into the mind of God. Do you notice the poem never says well me and I were hanging out and he told me to tell you guys the following. Did you notice the poem never talks like that that Paul Post source of inspiration or to fault one and Encounter With Jesus Christ and the road to Damascus. 2 an insight into the Old Testament because of that encounter. He never claims any other source of inspiration. So when Paul says they were predestined we turn it into something or just means that he for ordained that he commanded it before it came into being. When did he command it in a lot of places in the Old Testament? Deuteronomy 34 through 6 is this even if you have been banished to the distant land, this is God's foreknowledge. Right as he threw Moses and Israel and saying even if when you're banished to a distant land from there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back that's for knowledge. That's for ordination. That's pre destiny. It will bring you to the land that belong to your ancestors foreknowledge predestination and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and then ancestors the Lord your God will circumcise your hearts. And the hearts of your descendants so that you may love him. Do we see that Romans? 8:28 is just the Fulfillment of Deuteronomy 30. We see that. With all your heart all your soul and live sheet when he predestined and it's not some secret Council of God where he individually chose people. There's a problem. Is it Paul was writing to a church that is made up of June Jim Wright. And he wants to choose to know these Gentiles belonging. He wants the Gentiles to know you belong here. And he said that that was that's so because God always wanted it to be that way. t'god Rules by his word not my so secret Council that he never told anybody and he's the puppeteer.

He's told us what he's chosen to do beforehand and sew in Deuteronomy 32:39 243. It's a c now that I myself and he there is no God besides me. I put to death and I bring to life I have wounded and I will heal and no one can deliver out of my hand. I lift my hands to heaven and solemnly swear. That's where predestination happens. Not in a secret Council of God's mind. But in the exposed revelation of his word, I have left in my hand a swear as surely as I live forever sharpen my flashing sword and my hand grass stand in judgment. I will take Vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who help me. I tend to think that Jesus. Is that sword the holy spirit is that sword right? Cuz I will make my arrows drunk with blood in my wall my sword devours flash in the blood of the slain in the captives. The heads of the enemy leader sea goddess is swearing. I'm going to change this world. I'm going to bring an end to the Injustice and arrogance of humanity. I'm going to make it again in my image. He's promising not to Israel, but not real Rejoice you Nations you Gentiles with his people. For he will avenge the blood of his servants. He will take Vengeance on his enemies and make atonement for the land his land in people when we get over to chapter Paul is just going to he's going to Rapid Fire Old Testament passages that has to tell us that guess what the Gentiles are not Interlopers in the Messianic Feast that they were chosen beforehand and that God decided that God for ordained that they would be included in Israel. And that's why when Paul open the his gospel Proclamation. Is this Paul a servant of Christ. Jesus called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God. The gospel he predestined.

Promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy scriptures regarding his son who was as to his life a descendant of David. and through the spirit of Holiness was appointed the Son of God if you've been tracking with this series, you know that Paul is alluding to song to You are my son today. I have begotten you ask of me and I will make the name is your inheritance. And so he's saying that Jesus is the answer to song to he's been proclaimed. He's been appointed the Son of God because of the Resurrection from the dead and because of that through him we received Grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to The Obedience. It comes from faith is namesake. What did God ordain heal our day in the Jesus would come that Jesus would carry out his promise and that all the nations would be included would be invited to join his people. It's for his namesake.

have you ever hear it shut but someone's house around dinner time. And they're sitting there and they're about to eat. And they looking like we didn't know you were coming. Oh, I'm sorry. I just drop it. I don't mean to interrupt. Why don't you join us in Manhattan that let you know what you want to join them, right? You don't have plans for dinner, but you know, you're imposing they just didn't know you were me. Play for y'all scoot over and I put you a spot kind of sandwich between the kids. You know, you're not really invited there, you know, they're gracious and that wonderful, but you don't feel like you belong. right

I think the Gentiles may have felt that way when they're invited into the Messianic banquet. Paul was saying that that's not how is that you have come into a banquet hall that is sitting there with empty seats. And your name is right there. But everybody's been waiting for you to show up so that we can finally eat.

This is why it's so important. This is why it's so powerful for Paul to say God predestined you Gentiles you didn't enter load. You didn't just barge in your Interlopers. We've been waiting for you to come and sit down. She post doctrine of predestination. It's not some hyphy logical concept. It is a practical pastoral truth come in and get comfortable roll up your sleeves you belong here. It's why it is only found in Romans a book about Jew and Gentile coming together and Ephesians a book about you and Gentile coming together. Okay. So can we put to death this whole concept because it's real and they're on God. He didn't work like that. And also you Gentiles who are called you're in the call gentiles. to belong to Jesus Christ

Well, it's more than that to it than that. See God didn't just call him. He didn't just predestined that the Gentile and Jew come together in Christ. He has a purpose for it. Remember how Jobe said I didn't know your boy. That's why I was so stupid. Guess what? We know the plan. You want to know what it is? It's best to be conformed to the image of his son in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. . She got in his Essence his father hissy the Eternal Father. He has lived in fellowship with the Eternal Sun. There's no way to improve on that relationship but through Abraham seed God is going to multiply that relationship. This is why he took Abram exalted father and name Abraham father of a multitude. He wants more kids like Jesus and where those kids. So when we talk about something is good or bad. We need to know what the outcome is. Don't we? We can say is ice cream good. Are you watching your weight your waist what purpose that we have if it advances that purpose is good. If it doesn't advance that purpose it's bad. So we can't know what good or bad is until we know the purpose but now through the gospel. We've been told the purpose. Okay, it's only God can to find that and then the galatian letter Paul uses this kind of language and Galatians 4:17 through 19. He says those people these people who were coming in and trying to tell the Galatians that they needed to be physically circumcised. He says themselves to win you over. But for no good.

What they want is to alienate you from us so that you may have Zeal for them.

It's fine to be to be zealous provided the purpose is good and to be always so always just not just when I am with you my dear children for whom I am again in the Pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you. I was saying those people are doing something that's not good. They want you two to be connected.

I'm going to be in my interest is what's good. What's good that we might become like Jesus.

And so God God called his people. Well God is called his people. What does it mean to be a person of God? I remember when I used to work at UPS and I was about as religious as I am now, maybe a little more like, you know, I was different and every now and then someone would call me a man of God and I just kind of crazed that it it felt like that was too much. But folks I am and you are men and women of God, we belong to him and we need to accept that truth. And so reading on and Romans 8 32 32, it says in those he predestined he also called and those he called he also Justified and those he justified. He also glorified folks has it sound like we have a privileged position. But this privileged position is in the midst of a hostile environment Know What then shall we say in response to these things. If God is for us who can be against us Miss Universe or against us that they want to be against us. They said they're not going to be successful. This is he who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all how will he not also along with him graciously. Give us all things.

We hold a place of ultimate privilege in the midst of sin. What does that mean in John chapter 15 7 through 8. It says if you remain in me and my words remain in you ask whatever you wish and will be done for you. This is to my father's Glory that you may bear much fruit showing yourselves to be my disciples folks. What's going to show God's glory in the midst of a Dark World. It's going to be the close relationship we have with God that results in his response. He's going to answer our prayers are in a place where people are going to take things away from us, maybe Angelic and demonic powers are going to affect us some ways, but we got we got to stand with the kind of baldness. It says that's not because I failed that's not because I turn my back and I know that I belong to God. And I can count on him in those times a try. See these kind of promises are for people who are going through hardship and John 15 1 through 2. He says I am the vine. My father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. Here's the thing. Everybody's going to feel the knife.

You'll either feel the knife through alienation from God in French if you turn away if I turn away. This is too hard. I don't want to do it anymore catch up by you don't have to. I'll tell you that's a level of existential suffering that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Oh, you may have riches everybody made love you. You may be beautiful and well accepted people applied when you come in the room and you will be deeply miserable.

On the other side of it someone who is clinging to Christ someone who's saying I whatever this world brings at me. I will cling to Jesus Christ. They will feel the pain of lost friendships. I'll stop her tuna tees the reprise of an evil World a raid against them, but that pain will not cause them harm. It will not bring about existential suffering. It will result in more fruit.

Everybody's going to go but but some will benefit and the called will benefit and know everybody else will not reading on in Romans 8 33 through 34 who will bring any charge against Those whom God has chosen it is God who justifies who then is the one who condemns? No one. We're Above the Law. We see this courtroom scene and Satan comes to plead a case against job.

Satan's been kicked out of the courtroom. in Christ Jesus that there is no case against us if we are in him. Isn't that a joy that we don't have to go through trial folks? I know it.

When we go through trials, especially particularly fear once our minds are going to go back in wonder. Where did we fail? Did I do something wrong? Have I been harboring some secrets in am I guilty of something going to wrong? Somebody is the universe conspiring to punish me is karma coming to get me folks. Let me tell you something. We must banish all of those thoughts because we are in Christ and there is no case against us.

That when we suffer. it will only be for our good because our God has declared us just

Rowan 742 so my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ that you might belong to another to him. It was raised from the dead in order that we might bear fruit for God to see if we're going to bear fruit for God when we cling to Jesus and we only cling to Jesus when we know we are Justified.

until God he called his people. the Triumph through hardship Rating on Romans 8:34 because Christ Jesus who died more than that was raised to life is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us folks. This would all ring Halo. If God were standing up and having going this hurts me more than it does you? I promise it'll work out in the end. If you'll just hold on that's not enough. It's not enough going through severe trials. We need to go to become a human. Who would be rejected and hated by his generation who would be arrested and convicted as a criminal and executed under the cruelest of circumstances for our sake. See the path to sonship leads through hardship. If you think if I think that I'm going to grow in Christ by living on a silk pillow eating grapes that are fed to me by a harem to drive in the best cars in Lebanon the most luxurious things that everything's amazing in my life and somehow become like Jesus. I am living in a complete bill in Allstate.

That the only path the only real spiritual discipline that Jesus ever gave us you didn't say take up your Bible and follow me. He didn't say keep your daily quiet time and follow me. He said take up your cross and follow me Jesus one spiritual discipline. I'm not saying that the others are not helpful they are but his one spiritual discipline is across

the path leads through hardship. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

As it is written for your sake we Face death all day long. We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered you say when people begin to suffer and they begin to think something's gone wrong. I've made some spiritual being upset. The devil's got me or maybe I shouldn't have changed from being a pagan. And now my pagan gods are coming to get me. That's what happened to these people and he say no that's not the case.

And now he quote psalm 44:22 for your sake. We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. See we never have to suffer. The song is complaining to God in Psalm 44. He says if we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign God would not got a discovered it since he knows the secrets of the heart yet for your sake. We spray stuff all day long were considered a sheep to be slaughtered awake Lord. Why do you sleep Rouse yourself? Did I reject this forever? Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and our precious in the psalmist had this idea that if you're doing well, I mean if you're good, God will do good for you. Wishing I know I didn't mess up. So what's happening? pixel abandoned by God Disney Jesus died on the cross Here's the fact of the matter. We're never alone in our suffering anymore. He went through it, didn't he?

Two shall separate us from the love of Christ, right? All of these things they want separate us. We never have to be alone. I want to notice something else about that notice your sake. We Face death all day long. Could it be? That God wants to kind of love from us.

I think we need to know something. If we're going to be like Jesus we can have to operate on love and love hurts. every time Song of Solomon chapter 8 verses 67 it says Place me like a seal over your heart like a seal on your arm for love is as strong as death. It's jealousy unyielding as the grave it burns like blazing fat like Mighty Flame. Many Waters cannot quench love Rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one's house for love. It would be utterly scorned folks. We can't buy off Jesus. Jesus came and said, I love you and his love cost him dearly deeply and what that love the only thing that love will accept in return. Isn't equal response.

And so he's called us to Triumph through hardship. But here's the good news. He's called us to Triumph through hardship. Reading on Romans 8:37 know all these things. We are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Do you notice he says in all these things hidden say in spite of all these things. He says in them. We are conquerors. We are you can take everything but the girl that it interrupts in the victory. It's got to drive the devil crazy.

2nd Corinthians Chapter 4 verses 7 through 12. We see a picture of what this looks like Paul says but we have this treasure in Jars of Clay the surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side but not crushed perplexed but not in despair persecuted but not abandoned struck down but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body for weed or Alive are always being given over to death for Jesus sake so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal bodies. So then death is at work in us but life in you Paul is saying that everything that this world and that Satan has thrown at him has been changed into Redemptive. boot I'm so it can be with us.

Finally called us to Triumph through hardship for good. I am convinced that neither death nor life neither angels nor demons neither the president nor the future nor any powers. Do you notice this that he's got contrast here. He says death and life Angels or demons present or the future. Nor any powers neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation. Will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ. Jesus our lord all of creation height the depth are the Angels the demons wife Death full extreme and anything in between. Guess what it all has in common. It's created its temporary.

It's contingent.

But guess what? We've been invited into something. That's Eternal. It's the love of God that is in Christ. Jesus our lord before let there be light. There was the love of God in Christ Jesus.

The father and the son have been have lived in an eternal relationship of love for eternity past and you and I have been invited to it. Nothing in all creation can come between us. UC he's called us to Triumph through hardship for good as opposed to for a little while. And he's called us to try out through hardship for good for the good and the good is that we be invited into the relationship with Eternal Father.

That's just a recap in Romans 8:28. That's the message for we know that all things God works for the good of those who love him. But what is good, right we've been called according to his purpose we can count on that. It's going to work for a good but what is good good, is that that we form to the image of his son?

Are we ready to live a life like that? We know something Socrates didn't know. Bed and his best guess was a near-miss. But you and I have been blessed with the opportunity to know the inner mind of God that God has called his people to try out through hardship for good. You're just some suggestions for sharing life. Take Route think back to the last trial you experienced and find Christ in it. How did your suffering intersect with Christ's? Learn to notice that as you're going through it embrace it as an opportunity to share with him and to get closer to him.
