Intro: It is appropriate that we end Chp. 6 on Palm Sunday/Good Friday.
· Chp. 6 began with Paul saying: "All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death."
· Mistake: the cross is our ticket to heaven
· NT Focus: the cross is God's pivotal move in rectifying sin's corrupting work.
o Changed our identity = dead to sin, no longer a sinner
o Changed our relationship = dead to sin alive to God
o Changed our motivation = God is our master
o Changed our obligation = no longer under Law, but under grace
o Now = Changed our benefit
Romans 6:20 (NASB95)
Romans 6:20 NASB95
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
· Non-Christians often pride themselves on possessing a “freedom” appropriate to autonomous human beings and deride Christians
· And Paul admits that those apart from Christ have a certain “freedom.” But it is a freedom “with respect to” one thing only: “righteousness.”.
· Paul implies that the righteousness he describes here has to do with our actions rather than our status. As “slaves to sin,” people are “free” from the power and influence of the conduct that pleases God; they are deaf to God’s righteous demands and incapable of responding to them even were they to hear and respect them.
· For Paul makes it clear that those outside Christ, to varying degrees, can recognize right and wrong; but the power to do the right and turn from the wrong is not present.
{ This relationship with righteousness produced a specific benefit.}
Romans 6:21 (NASB95)
Romans 6:21 NASB95
21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death.
21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death.
There are two ways in which the verse could be punctuated:
1. “Therefore, what fruit did you have then, of which you are now ashamed? For the end of these is death.”
2. “Therefore, what fruit did you have then? That of which you are now ashamed. For the end of these is death.”
· If we adopt the first reading, the answer to the question is unexpressed but assumed to be negative, while the last clause is then an explanation of that assumed negative.
· The second. This is the clear parallelism between vv. 21 and 22 that is created if v. 21 is punctuated with a question mark after “then”:
Status Result Outcome
“then”: slaves of sin, free from righteousness Death
“fruit” bringing shame
{The opposite is true for those who are slaves to God.}
Romans 6:22 (NASB95)
Romans 6:22 NASB95
22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
“now”: free from sin, “fruit” bringing sanctification eternal life
slaves of God
· Dual aorist passive voiced causal participles = what has been done to us.
o Set free from sin
o Enslaved to God
{Summing up}
Romans 6:23 (NASB95)
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We earn death.
We receive life.
The difference is the power of the gospel.
Colossians 1:24–28 (NASB95)
Colossians 1:24–28 NASB95
24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions. 25 Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26 that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, 27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.
