Theme: Jesus breaks into our world to reveal himself. Who do you see and what will you lay down
Goal: Who do you see and what will you offer
ME: ORIENTATION: FIND COMMON GROUND WITH THE AUDIENCE
It is relatively easy for us to roster someone to go and gather palm leaves to spread in the church today.
And we can easily find music and a few good words to help us to remember and reenact Palm Sunday.
But what if you arrived inviting us to really lay down something important to us to acknowledge your arrival?
What if we knew the imminence of the danger that accompanies you, or sensed that the authorities were watching us as we worship?
How then, Jesus, would we meet you today and what would we spread before you?
And how would we regard humility from the One we hope will save the world?
Palm Sunday Jesus, help us to see how and where you enter our world today, and what you ask us to lay at your feet, and how we may welcome you in. Amen.
WE: IDENTIFICATION (MAKE IT CLEAR THAT YOU STRUGGLE)
Many miss Jesus in the day today. I did it today. Instead of seeing Jesus in the situation or taking that extra time with God I got caught in the schedule. I missed Jesus presence in the middle of my world.
I can’t speak for everything, but I know this when Christ’s love doesn’t come through me, or I don’t see others as Christ sees them I miss the point of living in Christ. Each event. Each opportunity. Each response is about giving or receiving Christ’s love.
4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
GOD: ILLUMINATION (THE GOAL IS TO RESOLVE THE TENSION

I. The Historical Event

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,
30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[a]
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
A. Bethphage and Bethany are located east of Jerusalem on a range of hills overlooking the city and the Kidron Valley. The exact location of Bethphage is not known
1. The Aramaic behind the name Bethphage means “House of Unripe Figs,” which, along with the name Mount of Olives,
2. oil Press: Gethsemane
3. Bethany, meaning “House of Ananiah,” is located one and a half miles east of Jerusalem on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives1
4. Each of the Gospels share the event with different points of view as this passage
5. Luke: Has the fullest account of Jesus Life.
6. Date: 65-85?

II. The prophetic event

A. Jesus knows what he is doing
He is sending the world a message. Luke understands this and shares it with the readers.

The Coming of Zion’s King

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River[a] to the ends of the earth. Zechariah 9:9-103

2. This is the image of a King. They would understand it.
3. People would share what Christ did for them.
4. Jesus brings salvation and restoration
Luke has ὑπεστρώννυον [hypestrōnnyon]) garments and palm leaves. Luke prefers prefixed verbs, so the difference is a matter of style. Luke does not mention the spreading of palm branches, probably because this Jewish detail was beyond his audience (Bock 1987: 122–23). This action had eschatological significance at the Feast of Tabernacles, but is surprising here before this feast. Nevertheless, the surprising timing would not nullify comprehension of the symbolism.1
With the entry comes praise and testimony. Luke alone notes the locale as the Mount of Olives, a place full of eschatological significance (see the exegesis of 19:29). Jesus continues to draw near (ἐγγίζω, engizō) the city. This remark and the one in 19:41 (cf. 19:11) show that, for Luke, Jesus is not yet in the city and that the journey to Jerusalem is nearing its end
38 Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[a]
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
A. Psalm 118:26a
He would deliver people from sin.

III. Who do you see and what will you lay down. (offer)

Amen.
