Nicodemus The Pharisee

Nicodemus -a Pharisee one who pledged to obey the Law to please God
Example of what the the Law turned in to:
Exodus 20:8–10 AV
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
what is work? must be defined
Every situation in life has to have a rule for
in the Mishna the rules run for 24 chapters
to tie a knot was work, but the knot had to be defined
sailors knot was against the law but a knot that could be tied with one hand is legal
so if you can find a way to do it legally your good
doing things legally was a matter of life and death to a Pharisee

Must be born Again/ From above/ Completely Radical

Greek word Anothem /again,from above, completely radical
Jesus first teaching is, not on how to live . But . how to receive a new life Be made alive
the Kingdom cannot be seen until you are born again
Nick is longing for this radical change but in his experience it’s impossible
He is the best of the best in his behavior, but still lacking
Isaiah 64:6 AV
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Nick is told that to be pure, it is an impossible task
I want to please God. I want to go to Heaven, BUT

Born of Water and Spirit

V 5 water represents clensing
Washing, all the sin has to go
but first there has to be an admission of guilt
Sanctification, being changed by God
Ephesians 5:26 AV
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
John 15:3 AV
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Spirit, a new radical life, a new life changing power
2 Corinthians 5:17 AV
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Born of Flesh and Spirit

Flesh- David ps 51 5 sinful from conception
Paul Eph 4 22 corrupted by deceitful desires
Jeremiah 17 9 Heart is deceitful and beyond cure
Jesus said
Mark 7:21–23 AV
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
A good looking pump on a septic tank - looks good on the outside
There has to be a new radical from God birth in our lives
From the spirit
God breathed in to us a new life
Just as the Spirit breathed into Adam, life

How can these things be?

A unwilling to believe skeptic
there are lives that the Holy Spirit touched and changed
something that humanly can see of the power of God
yet you are unwilling to believe
we don’t understand the wind but we do understand the evidence that is left behind
Ephesians 4:18 AV
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Proverbs 4:19 AV
The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
Jesus came to light the world
V 11 Faith in Gods word, He gives us knowledge
Hebrews 11:3 AV
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Conclusion
unless your salvation was a radical change, its not real
Nick knew the Bible, was a Bible teacher
obeyed all the rules
went to church, gave money, prayed
But born of the flesh only - Corrupt
Another Pharisee named Saul said this
Philippians 3:4–8 LEB
although I could have confidence even in the flesh. If anyone else thinks to put confidence in the flesh, I can do so more: circumcised on the eighth day, from the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born from Hebrews, according to the law a Pharisee, according to zeal persecuting the church, according to the righteousness in the law being blameless. But whatever things were gain to me, these things I have considered loss because of Christ. More than that, I even consider all things to be loss because of the surpassing greatness of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for the sake of whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and consider them dung, in order that I may gain Christ
if there was not a life change resulting of being born again its not real
