“Helping the World Meet Jesus”
John 12:20–26 NLT
20 Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration 21 paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” 22 Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus. 23 Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. 25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. 26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
John 12:12–26 NLT
12 The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors 13 took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!” 14 Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said: 15 “Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey’s colt.” 16 His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him. 17 Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. 18 That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!” 20 Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration 21 paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
INTRODUCTION:
A. Background Events Leading up to the Triumphal Entry:
Lazarus Raised from the dead ()
ground
Many people believed in Jesus because of Lazarus’ resurrection. ()
The religious leaders began a plot to kill Jesus. ()
Note: “So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.”
Note 2: “...the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.”
53 So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.
the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.
Mary anointed Jesus’ feet in Bethany. ()
More people flock to see Jesus and Lazarus (because of Jesus’ work in his life). () “When all the people* heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.”
When all the people* heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
The plot to kill Jesus is expanded to include the execution of Lazarus. ()
B. The Lord enters Jerusalem.
1. The whole point of the triumphal entry is the public proclamation of Jesus as Messiah and Savior!

I. THE WORLD NEEDS TO MEET KING JESUS ().

A. When the news of the Lord’s activity is made known, people are attracted to his presence. ()

12 The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors

13 took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted,

“Praise God!*

Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hail to the King of Israel!”

1. Sometimes the world can’t see Jesus because we get in the way ().
Jesus wants people to know who He is.
Jesus clearly identified himself as the messiah and savior according to the OT prophecy. ()
)
Zechariah 9:9 NLT
9 Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.
(1) Jesus has made himself known clearly through His Word (scripture).
b. Jesus clearly proclaims his power though the lives of his followers. ()
John 12:17–19 NLT
17 Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. 18 That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!”
(1.) Sometimes the world can’t see Jesus because we get in the way ().
(2.) They must see Him ().

B. When people ask, we must be ready to introduce them to Jesus! ()

John 12:20–22 NLT
20 Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration 21 paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” 22 Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.
We must not be surprised that people ask about Jesus.() ()
2. We must ask Jesus for help ().
John 12:22 NLT
22 Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.
a. Ask Him to reveal Himself in us.
(1) Like the early disciples ().
Acts 4:23–33 NLT
23 As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said. 24 When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— 25 you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans? 26 The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’ 27 “In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed. 28 But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will. 29 And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. 30 Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. 32 All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. 33 The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.

2 Peter 3:15 NLT
15 And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him—
1 Peter 3:18 NLT
18 Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.
2 Peter 3:18 NLT
18 Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.

II. THE WORLD CAN MEET JESUS ONLY WHEN OUR FOCUS IS CHRIST AND HIS MISSION. ()

A. The Need: It is time for Jesus to be glorified ().

John 12:23 NLT
23 Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory.
1. It is time for us to wake up and live to glorify Jesus ().
Romans 13:11–14 NLT
11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. 13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
2. The harvest fields require it ().
John 4:35 NLT
35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.

B. The key: We must die to self to bear fruit ().

John 12:24–25 NLT
24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. 25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.
1. The seed must lose its identity as a seed in order to multiply.
2. We must lose self for the sake of others coming to Christ.
1. For the lost: Must give up to Him or remain lost.
a. The rich young ruler kept the world and remained lost ().
2. For the saved: You can’t hold on to your life and bear fruit ().

C. The principle: serving Jesus means following Him. ()

John 12:26 NLT
26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
1. Serving means following Jesus!
a. To fail to follow means you can’t serve ().
Romans 12:1–2 NLT
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
2. If we serve we will be where Jesus is.
a. That means following his example and obeying his teachings. It means allowing love for Him to motivate our actions.

D. The Promise: The Father will honor our service to Jesus and His mission! ()

John 12:26b NLT
26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
