The Room, The Meal, and The Table

Exodus 12:12–13 ESV
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.
Exodus 13:8–10 ESV
8 You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.
Exodus 13:8-10
Mark 14:12–21 ESV
12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 17 And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Mark 14:12-

The Room

The Passover meal and The Feast of Unleavened Bread was a sacred moment for all Jews because it reminded them of how the Lord lead them out of slavery in Egypt and gave them their own land.
Here the disciples were asking Jesus where they should prepare the meal, Jerusalem was crowded because faithful Jews traveled there for the feast and space was limited.
It appears Jesus had made previous arrangements because he told them who to look ask about a room “a man carrying a jar of water” Most often men would carry leather pouches with water in them, name the big jars, which was carried mostly by women.
This was a dangerous time for Jesus because he knew there were those planning to kill him and he would have been careful to avoid capture till the proper time.
The room is significant because they had to celebrate the meal in a home together ()

1. Reminds the worshipers’ the need to stay under the protection of the blood.

2. Eating indoors protects the meat that God intended to be a sacred symbol of salvation.

Rooms can be used for sacred moments. Here at SCF this room is prepared weekly for woship, prayer and the proclamation of God’s word. Several here prepare their homes in order to host friends and family in our MC groups for the same reason. They break bread together, pray, study his word and intentionally seek out ways to serve others on God’s behalf.

4. One lamb, one family

The Meal

The disciples prepared the passover meal which would have included goat/lamb and unleavened bread. The purpose of this meal was to remind them of the time their firstborn were spared when God strikes all the first born in Egypt in order to show Pharoah’s he was the one true God and release his people.

Careful preparation of the meat illustrates the sacredness of the body of Christ offered up on the cross for them as a substitutionary atonement in the future.

One Lamb/One Family

Exodus 12:12–13 ESV
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

The Table

Exodus 13:9–16 ESV
9 And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year. 11 “When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, 12 you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the Lord’s. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall say to him, ‘By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 15 For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”
“With the power of His mighty hand.”

The Table

A Place to be reminded

This is what they were instructed to teach their children.
“With the power of His mighty hand.”

Exodus 13:14 ESV
14 And when in time to come your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall say to him, ‘By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery.
The table was prepared and Jesus plus the 12 disciples entered the room.
Mark 14:22–25 ESV
22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Luke 22:19 ESV
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Mark 14:

Exodus 13:
The Lords supper “in remembrance of me”

Luke 22:19
The table was prepared and Jesus plus the 12 disciples entered the room.
These men were celebrating the passover meal with THE prepared Lamb of God who would die for the sins of the world.
He was surrounded by friends and a trader. They would scatter when he is arrested.
Friends that would scatter when he arrested
one would betray him.
Mark 14:
Mark 14:27 ESV
27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
Jesus shared a meal with people he knew would fail him in one way or another. He would extend forgiveness to Peter and commission the remaining ones to go and tell everyone of this gift offered by God the father through his son Jesus
Conclusion
As we enter this time of year when we celebrate the risen savior we need to be reminded just like the Jewish people did of God’s mighty hand. Jesus has delivered us out of the bondage of sin
Revelation 1:5 ESV
5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood
We need to remind our children why we worship Jesus. Why do we go the church on Sunday? Why do we have Missional Community? Why do we pray? Why do we study? Why do we serve others?
Why do we believe?
Jesus entered a room and sat at the table with a person who he knew would betray him and with others who would flee at the time of his arrest.
He became the passover Lamb for us, people who are sometimes apathetic towards God, people who honor him with their lips and not their hearts.
That should give us all comfort because that means we all have a place at the table with Jesus if we repent and believe. The bibles says IN “AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.”
Acts 2:21 ESV
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
