Introduction

What have we learned so far as we have looked at the first two chapters of Zechariah?
He is a young man,
He is born where most likely?
The Lord is calling him to lead the people to draw close to the Lord their God and with it return to the re-building of his house.
Anything else stand out to you?
So lets get started......
So lets begin with verses 1-2
Zechariah 3:1–2 ESV
1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?”
Joshua the high priest, mentioned here is also mentioned in Haggai chapter 1 verse 1.
Now it says in verse one that Zechariah was shown this by the interpreting angel, The high priest also represents Jerusalem, or the elect people of god. he is put in trial, and is “plucked” as if the last minute, in the nick of time from the fire. And the high priest is standing before the Lord
The high priest is the one who ministers before Lord in the Temple, and he is the one who represents them in the temple as he serves, makes the proper offerings, especially those concerning sin.
Satan is there, he is the great adversary of man, and like in a court of law he is standing there to accuse him, to tell the Lord why he is guilty. And is Satan is the accuser, then the Messiah is our advocate for his people. Remember ,
1 John 2:1 ESV
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
And in verse 2, we see that the angel of the Lord, Jehovah, himself there to rebuke the Devil, in fact the rebuke happens twice. Jerusalem is the one whom the Lord has chosen,
It is not the merit of the people that has helped them, it is the fact that the Lord chosen them, As is told to us in
John 15:16 ESV
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
John 15:16
And again what was said earlier, they were plucked from the fire. Remember what is said in
Zechariah 1:7 ESV
7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, son of Iddo, saying,
again what was said earlier, plucked from the fire.
And then listen to , 33-34
Romans 8:33–34 ESV
33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Now verses 3-4
Zechariah 3:3–4 ESV
3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.”
Now verse 3 tells us that Joshua was standing before the angel. And he was wearing filthy garments, these garments represent sin.
Now verse 3 tells us that Joshua was standing before the angel. And he was wearing filthy garments, these garments represent sin.
Proverbs 30:12 ESV
12 There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth.
Prov 30:12
Isaiah 64:6 ESV
6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
And in verse 4 the angel of the Lord said to those who standing before Joshua, remove his filthy garments. these that stood before him were angels, ministering angels who does the work and service of the Lord.
The remove of his dirty clothes is the symbolic reference of sin, sin that is being removed from a person, or corporeality as a people.
They were also to put on him clean garments, ones that show or reveal that God has forgiven their sin, made them acceptable in His sight. This seems to have a dual meaning...
The people of Israel themselves, but also that the priesthood is found acceptable as well, and thus they can minister before the Lord in an acceptable way.
Verse 5
Zechariah 3:5 ESV
5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.
So as Joshua has been clothed in clean priestly garments, garments that refer to imputed righteousness on behalf of the people and the priesthood. the call for a turban symbolized it all the more.
The turban has a phrase on it that said “Holy unto the Lord” The call for a clean turban means that Israel’s priestly place with God had been restored.
Verses 6-7
Zechariah 3:6–7 ESV
6 And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured Joshua, 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here.
And the angel of the Lord assures Joshua if he walks in the ways of the Lord, he will do well and find success. If they are obedient, if they follow the ways of the Lord then their would be success....
V 8-10
Zechariah 3:8–10 ESV
8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring my servant the Branch. 9 For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. 10 In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come under his vine and under his fig tree.”
Hear now is a call to listen carefully, He is demanding the attention of Joshua, ....
You and those below you, who are serving in the priesthood. Not that they are there with him at that particular moment, but they represent the entire council if you will, so they are together. They represent the future Israel.
And with it, the Lord has a promise that is coming… a branch, a shoot from the line of David.
The phrase my servant and the branch are two unique terms which speak to the Lord’s future promise.
Isaiah 42:1 ESV
1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
Ezekiel 34:23 ESV
23 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd.
Ezekiel 34:23–24 ESV
23 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the Lord; I have spoken.
Ezek
Ezek
these are just two references for us to recognize what the Lord was speaking about here as well.
Branch speaks to the humble beginnings of the Messiah, Jesus was born into a humble carpenter family, not a palace.
Jeremiah 23:5 ESV
5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
Isaiah 4:2 ESV
2 In that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and honor of the survivors of Israel.
Isa
The phrase (For behold in verse 9) is a phrase for encouragement. Encouragement for the Jews in the building the Temple.
Jehovah has laid the foundation stone as the chief architect before the presence of Joshua,
The foundation stone is speaking of Christ of course. He is before called the branch, but now He is the chief stone.
The eyes speak to the omniscient nature of the Lord.
verse 9, I will remove the inequity if the land in a single day… We know already that the Lord has removed the filthy garments of the priests and thus the people as well. But it speaks to a future time when the sins of the people will be forgiven..
Romans 11:25–27 ESV
25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”; 27 “and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”
Romans 11:24–25 ESV
24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree. 25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
We know that all of this is only possible because of Jesus.
Verse 10
Speaks to a peace that will come when Jesus redeems us at Calvary. Under the vine and fig tree is a embelm of tranquil propserity
1 Kings 4:25 ESV
25 And Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon.
Romans 5:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1
Micah 4:4 ESV
4 but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.
