God’s voice in the baptism vs the transfiguration
The lack of faith in the demon scenario following the most clear sign of who Jesus is.
Faith progression
Who is this guy? (Herod, crowds)
Who am I? (crowds, Peter)
Rejection, death, resurrection
So, who are you now? (taking up the cross)
What would it take for this change to be real? What is this whole Messiah thing about? I’ll show you what I am talking about.
Life as a Christian will be hard and worth it.
TRANSFIGURATION
Contrast: Glory and Suffering
Added “listen to Him”
Lack of faith: 3 up top, 9 below
3 up top: Let’s keep going with the system
9 below: Look how important we are that we can cast out demons
The father believed more than the disciples did
Transition: it isn’t about fame, its actually about rejection
Disciples didn’t understand and so they still considered the usual way to understand “greatness”

Don’t you see that when you give up your name and you are under my name then it is “us”?

This humility causes you to serve others
(Its not about you. Dreams, job you “want” to do, money, friends- You are not the deciding factor in there)
Especially the lowest, most unimportant, least rewarding ones.
Welcomes VS Fall Away (37 vs 42)

Unimportant people—Jesus— God
(Unimportant because your name is greater than Jesus’)
In fact, you’d better remove every obstacle in the way that stops you from doing so because judgment is real
Especially the lowest, most unimportant, least rewarding ones.
What is the point of unsalty salt?! You HAVE to have saltiness.
You should be pointing others to Jesus and you are tripping yourself
Welcomes VS Fall Away (37 vs 42)
If you do have that salt (serving humbly), you will glorify God in this life, living as what keeps it salty

If you do not (living for your name) , then your role will be to glorify God by being punished for evil for eternity
This shows sins evil
Christians should make Jesus famous through the hard things we endure.
This shows God’s goodness
This is the Gospel: Humbly follow Jesus or Don’t.

Burn up like a sacrifices
Better have what it needs
9 fail at the bottom while 3 fail at the top
This exorcism has bits and pieces of every other demon account
But, they could cast out the other ones, not this one?
The lesson here is in humility as a disciple-servant

Outline

Last Week

Jesus told us that once we knew who He was that we would be different.
Who is this guy?
Who am I?
And then we would live differently.
Picking up the cross
Because He is better.
Life as a Christian is hard, but it is worth it.
Following Jesus is difficult and has suffering ahead… But what else is ahead?

This Week

Transfiguration shows the glory that is coming
Suffering VS Joy
Hard decisions now for endless joy later
Failing at Faith Mark
The Christian lives through suffering (waiting for glory) by humility (His Name is greatest) (How am I supposed to live in a world like this??) ,
That trust in God is lived out by humility (His Name is greatest)
The demon is more powerful than just disciples.
Humbled in God = Power
Which human is greatest— Your name
Welcome the children— No name for you, only my name!
“He who sent me” God just reminded you in the transfiguration that He sent Him.
John responded— My name/your name

Don’t you see that when you give up your name and you are under my name then it is “us”?
Humility places us at the back of line (serving the least)
This is Specific (make moves)
