In 1982, Tom Peters and Bob Waterman (In Search of Excellence) listed qualities they believed contributed to the success of 43 high-quality enterprises.  Pascale et al.  (Surfing the Edge of Chaos) note that while the traits were beyond reproach (e.g. clear vision, strong values), within five years half of the highlighted companies were in trouble.  (This point leads to the question, “How many exemplary congregations will still be models of excellence five years from now?”)
