This week we are continuing our study on the Come to the Lord’s table and what that mean for us. Last week if you where not here we talked about what the Lord’s supper is and what the point is.
The lord’s supper is a time to look the the past. When the Israelite where save for the angel of death with the passover lamb. Jesus is that passover lamb.
The Lords supper is also a time to look to future to the coming of the kingdom of God. When Jesus come back and set up is earthly kingdom at the end of time.
Finally the Lords supper is a time or remembrance of what Christ did on the cross for you and me.
This week we are looking at how we prepare ourself to take the lords supper. Our main text for today is 1 Corinthians 11:27-32.
Corinthians was written by Paul to the church in the city of Corinth. Corinth was a costal city and a big huble for sea traffic of the area. It was was a place of many different people group. where their cultures and religious mingled with everyone else. A place with many god’s and lord’s and place were sin flowed free. It a very wealthily city. Must like city of New Orleans is today.
Paul wrote the letter to the church because was plagued with division on many problems, with sexual immorality, and think they were better than others. The first part of this letter deal with this problems and what God say about them. At this time the Lords supper was take in conject with a big meal at the Lords Table. As we come to 1 Corinthian 11:17 The church on occasions was using the Lords Table to make social distinction between the rich and the poor. Some people with go hungry while other would be drunk. This then lend us to our many passage. In 1 Corinthians 11:27
1 Corinthians 11:27–32 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
the many thing we can take away for what Paul was saying to the Corinthians is
Lord’s supper is not just a ritual. It’s an act of obedience and remembrance.
Who is worthy?
1 Corinthians 11:27 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
in a sense we are all unworthy of God Love .
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Sin does allow us to come to God.
but through the power and the blood of Christ. We are saved and we are all worthy to partake of the Lord’s supper.
Say you are college and hear about this amazing party that someone. You think to yourself that sound like a bast I should go. The night comes for the party and you show up dressing in normal clothes blue jean and a tea shirt. you walk in and relize that this party is black tie invite. Meaning nice suit, grouges dress. As soon as you walk in the host of the party comes to you say you cann’t be here cause you are not dressed right. then you are thrown out onto the curb.
in the same way we have to be prepared for the kingdom of heaven. be is follows of Christ. Jesus told a story very simaure to the story I just shared. It in Matthew 22:1-14 the Wedding Feast. We all have a invite wait. but we all need to prepare so we do not get throw out in to the cold cause we where unprepared
