John 17 is called The High Priestly Prayer:
Here Jesus prays for the sacrifice- Himself, that God would be glorified even in the events that would take place in just hours.
They Jesus turns to those who have been with Him, asking that God would Keep them and not allow them to fall away.
This is a pastoral prayer, my prayer for you that none would be lost.
Then Jesus turns to those who would believe.
Jesus knew that the cross wouldn’t just affect those who walked with Him in AD 33, But that the affects of the cross would radically echo through History.
That lives would be so changed because of this gospel message that men and women worldwide would pray that same prayer of Christ in the garden “Not our will but your be done.”
These people would seek the glory of God rather then the comforts of this world.
The disciples would go on to do the same, giving their lives for the glory of God, Because this gospel message.
Christ Jesus took their place on that cross.

I was the one who was evil, who did wrong, who deserve the punishment for my actions, yet Christ drank the cup.
When we understand this, our lives are changed, We live not for ourselves but a life of worship that says, “God be glorify in through my life, Not my Will but yours be done.”

Jesus in John 13 tells Judas who would betray to “Do it quickly.”
Jesus knew what was going to happen, yet as we read this passage He didn’t run, in fact he actually went to a place where he always goes.
It is as if Jesus went out of His way to be apprehended.
Who shows up?
Not just a few soldiers, or temple guards.
“A Band of soldiers”- Roughly Six- seven hundred soldiers plus the officers from the temple, and what happens when they come before Jesus, They all fall back and bow.
Jesus says “I am” a term that is found all through out the book of John- 7 times Jesus says these “I am” statement.
“I AM the Bread of Life” John 6:35,41,48,51
“I AM the Light of the World” John 8:12
“I AM the Door of the sheep” John 10:7,9
“I AM the Good Shepherd” John 10:11,14
“I AM the Resurrection and the Life” John 11:25
“I AM the Way, the Truth, the Life” John 14:6
“I AM the true Vine” John 15:1,5
All of this statements point to Jesus being God! Moses asked God “who shall I say sent me?” God response “ I AM, has sent you.”
Why did the soldiers fall back in fear?
It was because there were standing before God, and all the events that would take place was because “I AM” had allowed them to take place.
The cross was the purpose of Christ coming into this world.
Jesus didn’t run from this time of suffering that would bring you and me great joy.
Without the suffering of the cross there would be no joy of entirety for you and me.
We needed a savior who would come and take our places, cause without that we stand condemned in sin.
You see the verdict for you and for me was guilty, and the sentence was death, but Christ stepped in and paid the wages of my sin.
It was never a matter of Goodness cause everyone is a sinner.
Christ came for the cross, even when one of His own tried to make an effort for Him to get away Jesus said John 18:11 “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” God was still in control on this dark moment.
Peter’s bravery is not only useless, it is a denial of the work to which Jesus has just consecrated himself

They “arrested Jesus and bound Him.”
This man whom they had just fell down before has now turned Himself over to them.
Caiaphas advised John 18:14, “it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.”
One would die for many
“We all have gone astray.”-
Jesus told the Disciples in John 16:32 “You will leave me alone” Peter leaves Jesus.
Peter’s denial- Peter disowns his Lord.
He did this not as someone who had only heard the words fo Jesus second hand, but he was a disciple; one who had lived with Jesus, there was a sense of being an intimate friend.
John 18:25, John takes us back back to the fire we first saw in verse 18, where Peter stood warming himself.
The reason for interweaving Jesus’ first replies to his accusers with Peter’s denials is to make the contrast stand out: ‘John has constructed a dramatic contrast wherein Jesus stands up to his questioners and denies nothing, while Peter cowers before his questioners and denies everything’
What does Peter’s denial show us?
Peter failed at the moment of truth.
Such is the fallen human nature.
The passage also teaches us, especially in light of Peter’s later restoration, what kind of people Jesus died to save.
He had no need to die for people who are sinless, for there are no such people.
He gave Himself for people who have it in them to betray Him, people like you and me.
However, He will never betray those on whom He sets His love, but will love them faithfully for all time.
