The Fear Factor
Fear: an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.Fear is a God-given emotion for the purpose of self-preservation.
It can be understood as the "fight or flight" response to anything threatening.
(Hebrew) - yaw-raw; (Greek) - φοβεω.
Both yaw-raw and φοβεω are verbs, meaning action, not just feeling or emotion.Fear should never debilitate or paralyze us.
Fear, like any emotion, must be kept in balance and controlled.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Blaise Pascal - True fear comes from faith; false fear comes from doubt.
True fear is joined to hope, because it is born of faith, and because men hope in the God in whom they believe.
False fear is joined to despair, because men fear the God in whom they have no belief.
The former fear to lose Him; the latter fear to find Him.
In the Bible we are told to “not fear” and to “to fear the Lord.”
How do we balance this?How do we fear the Lord?
How is that fleshed out?
First, the fear of the Lord is neither inherent nor intuitive; it is learned.
What is the fear of the Lord?
It is an inner reverence and love manifested in an outer holiness and piety.
We fear Him b/c of His goodness, not His wrath, or that He stands as the judge of all.
“Mark” means to keep record of, take an accounting.
We hold Him in revenant awe b/c of the great love He has for us in forgiving us.
Notice here also that God expects us to teach our children to fear the Lord.
Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live, righteously, and godly in the present age,
God gave the law in order for man to fear the Lord.
This brought about a certain apprehension b/c of imperfection—man can’t keep the law in himself.We flesh out our fear and reverence of God by how we live—righteously.
Under the new covenant, the goodness and love of God has been perfected, and our fear has taken on a new dimension.
We don’t have to fear His wrath and judgement.
OT there was consequences and judgement for not keeping the law, even though God often delayed it b/c of His goodness.
NT there is hope and confidence that what I lack, He will make up for me on the day of judgement.
3 Blessings from Walking In The Fear of The Lord
ProtectionWe are protected from judgement ().
We are protected from the repercussions of evil.
We are protected from His presence.

Notice that fear came upon all those who witnessed and heard of this.
It’s like water and fire; they both are blessings but can bring great harm.
The fear of the Lord prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
