Last week we talked about dating, today we will discuss: what’s the point of marriage?
If one of the primary points to dating to to find a spouse, we must now look at what’s the point of marriage.
This will help us in how to choose who we will date.
Anyone remember the qualifications of dating?
Saved
Following Jesus
Obviously these still apply in marriage because you will have first checked these out before you even started dating them.
So lets say you have found yourself a man/woman that is saved, they love the Lord and are following Jesus with all their heart.
Now what?
We will seek to answer this question tonight.
What’s the point of marriage?
First off let’s answer the question What is marriage?
It is a covenant relationship between a man and women.
Malachi 2:16 AV 1873
16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: For one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: Therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

To Form a Ministry Partnership

As we looked at last week, God gave Adam Eve when he was busy doing the mission that God had given him.
What is the mission God gave us?
Genesis 2:15–23 AV 1873
15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. 18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him. 19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Genesis 2:15
So God will give you and your spouse a plan to accomplish the mission together.
Marriage is the union of
Genesis 2:24 AV 1873
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
God tells Adam & Eve to leave and cleave.
Leave momma and daddy and go start your own family!
Husbands and wives are now unified as one individual in the eyes of God.
You are now joined till death do you part with this person in life and ministry.
Don’t join to the wrong person.
Side note: You don’t want to join someone in marriage who is busy chasing vain pursuits, this will leave you empty and frustrated.
God gave us marriage so that we can accomplish His mission in unity with a companion.

To Mirror God’s Church to the World

A biblical marriage pictures Jesus to the world.
It demonstrates His love for us and our willing submission to his lead.
Ephesians 5:22–33 AV 1873
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 for we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
A marriage is a picture of Christ and the church.
v.25 Men are supposed to be an picture of Jesus
A biblical husband lays down his life for his wife
v. 22-23 Women are a picture of the church
A biblical wife follows the lead of her husband as they are lead in love and truth by Jesus.
God gave us marriage so that our marriage would be a beacon of light to the lost world. A biblical marriage exemplifies Jesus’ relationship with His church.
