recap:
You were created to know and love God.
Worship, relationship, etc.
God formed you for His family.
You learn to love others.
fellowship, church family
You were created to become more like Christ
life will make more sense when you understand that.
We need to live, talk, walk, think, value like Jesus.
TO become more like Jesus.
That is the 3rd purpose for our lives.
Once you’re born into the family, God wants you to grow up (be raised) in this church family.
God is more interested in who you are (becoming) than what you do
Everything we spend so much time stressing/worrying over in this life is temporary and does not matter.
When we die, we cannot take any of our stuff with us.
The only thing that matters is our character, who we are.
Our character, who we are, is the only thing we will take with us when we die.
God put you on this planet to develop your character.
TO help you grow up, spiritually.
TO become more like CHrist.
Clarification: becoming like Jesus, does not mean you will become a God.
You will never be a God.
Not to become a God, but to become Godly.
TO be like a God in character.
Why do we go through tough stuff?
“why is this happening to me?” Why?
The tough moments of our life help shape us into becoming more like Jesus.
There were times when Jesus was:
tempted to give up
angry at others
lonely
disappointed
This life is not the COMFORT side of life.
Life is not going to be easy.
God never promises easy lives.
This life is the classroom/teaching side.
We’re learning how to live!
How to live Godly lives.
So we are to be become more like Jesus.
SO what was Jesus like?
This passage does a good job explaining: the perfect picture of Jesus.
That’s the perfect picture of Jesus.
He is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, good, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
SO if God created us to become more like Jesus, how is the Holy Spirit going to make us more like Jesus?
Are we just gonna be walking down the road and get magically transformed into the most loving person?
No! There is no “patience pill” you can take.
No book you can read, or no lesson you can listen to.
That’s not how it works.
It’s a life-long process of becoming like Jesus.
It takes time.
Discipleship is the life-long process of becoming more like Jesus.
DO you wanna know how God teaches you those 9 traits?
He puts you in situations where you’re faced with the exact opposite.
He teaches us love, by bringing us close to people that are really difficult to love.
It’s easy to love people that are cool like you.
God is teaching us love when we’re around people like that.
We have to learn to love.
How about Joy? Happiness is different from Joy. Happiness is determined by what is happening.
Our happiness comes and goes.
But Joy is different.
It is internal and eternal.
We learn joy in the middle of grief.
In the middle of loss, we can have/find joy.
What about peace?
Peace is learned by chaos.
learned in the middle of things not going the way they are supposed to!
Patience - how do we learn patience?
By making you wait for things.
“Mom, i want an iPhone EVERYBODY has one.
I can’t wait until I’m 16, that’s 4 years from now!” Traffic jams, waiting rooms, delays, changes of plans, these teach us patience!
Ever noticed that sometimes God doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to answer our prayers?
We’re in God’s waiting room.
Our growth is not like a vending machine!
It’s not like you put in the prayers, and God sends you the character!
God uses the problems in our lives to help us grow our character.
If we had 0 problems, we’d be a spoiled brat.
The whole goal of life is unlearning selfishness.
We have problems/difficulties to develop our character.
Every temptation presents a choice.
You can give in, not grow, maybe even move backwards.
You can you resist the temptation.
Every time you resist a temptation you grow more like Jesus.
EVERY situation is like this.
The 3rd purpose of Life is to: Grow up spiritually and become more like Christ
