Introduction
I.
This was birthed in the understanding of the need for maturation of the believer.
a.
During a pastoral bible study Dr. Hamby’s bread and butter became chapter five.
This chapter is about the priestly ministry of Christ.
b.
Hebrews 5:12–14 (NKJV) 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
c. 1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV) 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
d.
We must find the proper pattern for spiritual induction into ministry.
At this point he became aware of a point that he had previously overlooked.
II.
Jesus had no right to Ministry until the Father said, “You are my son.”
a. Mark 1:11 (NKJV) 11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
b.
In other words, station birth, gifts, skills, talents, ability, preparation, etc.…, mean nothing until the Father voices his approval.
c.
And no man taketh this honor unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
Hebrews 5:4 (KJV)
d.
When I (he) would give dissertations about ministry fathers and mothers, I would be surrounded by bewildered, emotional men and women asking me to cover their ministries because they really didn’t have a spiritual father.
[1]
e. Equally as disturbing is when someone would tell me the minister they were saved under.
The issue is not being sired into the Kingdom but being fathered into the ministry.
f.
This cannot be done by correspondence!
III.
The day it all changed for me be revelation/ inspiration.
a. Somewhere between jet lag, inspiration, or chores I felt an ache in my spirit that often came with rebuke.
b.
I felt caught away amid a lonely desert where fell the bleached bones of countless misguided purposeless and failed ministries
I get the point he’s trying to make; or at least the point I hope he’s trying to make.
The question I have is, does he have the right to call anyone’s ministry ““Purposeless?”
Two possibilities occur to me as to what Dr. Hamby is trying to communicate:
The first might be that ministry has a pattern; those that come into ministry need to do so according to the prescribed pattern or suffer ministry death.
The second point he could be making is that ministry is a calling, not a play thing.
Those that enter ministry without being called do so at their own peril.
c.
The forlorn lost place between the spring of hopeful beginning and the still waters of quiet consummation.
Again, there is to much emphasis on man and not enough on God.
I think more than anything it’s an issue of ethics, we will see this in the next paragraph.
d.
The few that somehow survive pack practiced cliché and clutch cassette canteens sipping waters from stolen streams.
As I said above, I think the issue here is an issue of ethics.
It is not ok to act as if it is a thought original to you when it is not.
e.
I began to wrestle with what seemed to be disconnected scripture lifted out of certain context.
As I continued to weigh them together, their meaning became clearer and clearer.
f.
One passage was Acts 17:30 (NKJV) 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,
g.
The need for repentance dug deep into my spirit and as I began to reach out for understanding it became obvious to me that some out of order situation required attention and eventually then turn around.
h.
Malachi 4:5–6 (NKJV) 5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.6
And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
There it was, “the heart of the Father.”
That phrase shattered my peace and filled me with a painful remorse that I hardly know how to express.
i.
The heart of this father refused to be turned.
I knew that didn’t mean that everyone who requested my help did not automatically belong to me.
j.
However, I was faced with the awful truth that some lonely women and men in gospel work had been rejected by me leaving them orphans or even worse, bastards.
k.
Furthermore, any inheritance either through gifting or anointing was being withheld, causing them painful endurance of spiritual wonderings and single portions.
[1] The strong likelihood is that in or “reformation,” we threw the baby out with the bath water when it comes to bishops.
It is my belief that the proper term is for the apostolic ministry in the world today.
This moves the mystery off the term.
No modern apostle or Bishop should see him self as writing scripture or anything like that.
