1 Thess 4:13-18
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.
V. 13, Paul addresses a common issue people face in all times and places: grief over loved ones who have died. Xnity makes a difference in how we grieve - we have hope.
V. 14, Xn hope isn’t vacuous. It is based on the resurrection of JC. If one rose from death then others can too. God promises that us back to life with JC.
V. 16-17, the Lord JC promises that the dead in Christ will rise, and we who remain alive will join them with JC.

A psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The ancient wisdom - to see God as our Good Shepherd…my Shepherd, who looks after me personally. The comfort this Psalm offers is how it views our life on earth, not from the world’s point of view, but from God’s eternal viewpoint.

Now the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering around to hear him. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
People misunderstand JC. He came for sinners (). Every week we pray a prayer of confession, reminding us that we’re all sinners. That means we’re all people JC came to save (contra the self-righteous Pharisees).
JC rejoices to save us (). All heaven rejoices when another sinner saved by JC enters heaven. That joy was released again when Carmencita entered heaven.

V. 17b, we will be [together] with the Lord FOREVER!
That is God’s encouraging word. He calls you not to live, stuck in grief, but to emerge from grief thru hope in the resurrection to eternal life thru faith in JC - hope secured by JC’s own resurrection. Live by the light of eternal resurrection.
