Sermon Tone Analysis

INTRODUCTION (10 minutes)

The deep end!

That was the ultimate goal for any 7 year old boy!

People were having so much fun….there

were diving boards, a high dive.

If you want to know what my goal for that summer was you didn’t have to look any further than the local pool high dive.

I can remember that summer because my mom got a family pass to the pool which meant that I could go to the pool anytime I wanted to go for free!

People were having fun in the shallow side of the pool and this particular pool even had a sprinkler and a few obstacles to play on, but what had my attention was that deep end!

The older boys were there, they were definitely having more fun.

The context for this passage cannot be overlooked.

The opening portion if this book explains why this book was written. 1 Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. 2 They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples.

3 Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write an accurate account for you, most honorable Theophilus, 4 so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught.

The very reason this book was written was so that a person or group pf people could be sure of their faith and in result grow as people and grow the Kingdom for God’s purposes.

So let’s put this story in that frame………

EXPLANATION (10 minutes)

One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.

3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water.

So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”

-Jesus had already been preaching and doing miracles and we can red about those more in the previous chapters, but suffice to say that he had a reputation of preaching things that were pretty controversial.

If you don’t think so look back to chapter 4 where the people from his own town tried to throw him off a cliff

-Since leaving Nazareth Jesus traveled east to come to the Sea of Galilee and the text says that the boats were empty and the fishermen were washing their nets

-Fish all night

-Come in and off load the catch

-Some might go to market or sell right from the boats

-After they sold their catch they would clean the nets and go home

-By the time the fishermen were cleaning their nets it could be anywhere from mid-morning to almost lunchtime depending on the amount of fish they caught.

-These guys are tried and ready to go to bed and then Jesus looks at Peter and tells him to go out to deeper water and let down his nets…..WHAT?!?!?!!!

5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing.

But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”

This is a significant response for a few reasons

He just worked a full night fishing, selling the fish, and cleaning his nets, and listening to Jesus teachNets were not made for deep water fishingIt was close to the middle of the dayTemperature would rise Fish go to the bottom of the lake to cooler water

No self respecting fisherman would go to deep water close to the middle of the day and expect to catch anything!

Most likely the type of net Peter was using was called a trammel net which required 2 boats to operate properly......so we can see that peter wasn't expecting anything to happen.

-The word used for Master here is Epistata…….means

roughly a person of authority.

So Peter was not recognizing Jesus as HIS Master or even from God at this point he just was speaking to him as one who had a superior authority to Peter.

-Respecting this good teacher is what Peter was doing

-can you imagine the looks and laughter Peter was getting as he was going out to deeper water and even though the scripture says nothing……we know enough about Peter that we can picture this outspoken dude was not happy to do this.

6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.

This was a time when they were obedient and you can see the results of their obedience.

There was another time in scripture where we see this promise given….—the

priests were stealing from the God through their offerings and God told them that if they brought their whole tither into the temple that God would open the flood gates of heaven and their storehouses would not be able to contain the blessing

-This blessing we see here and with Peter was a tangible result, but these blessings are not limited to money or other tangible blessings.

Jesus was making a statement in the fact that all common sense was telling them they would not catch any fish, but with Jesus life is anything but common so common sense does not apply when we walk with Jesus.

We need to be in tune with what he is asking and be willing to be obedient even if it makes no sense to us as “EXPERTS”

8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.

10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.

Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid!

From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

When Peter understood what was going on at that time he kneels and confesses Jesus as Lord… “oh, Lord” in the greek it is Kyrie which comes from the greek word Kurios and this is the name that is used for God as Lord.

In Matthew it is the same words used for as “An Angel of the Lord appeared”.

Peter understands he is not just in the presence of a rabbi, but of one who can control the natural order of things and only God can do that……he acknowledges his understanding of who Jesus is by leaving his business and following Jesus.

-Peter left all he knew…..for the unknown

-You could say Peter left and followed Jesus into the deep waters of his life

APPLICATION (10 Minutes)

The miracles of God were always happening…..but they were not happening in the mainstream of faith they were happening out in the deep waters.

-Deep water represents mystery, unknown

-There was always a risk involved with going into deep waters

Bottom Line: Jesus is moving to deeper waters……you comin?
