Introduction
I. Christ gives Spiritual life v.25
The Lord Jesus begins this paragraph with two words.
“Truly, truly...”
These two words are used by our Lord to tell us that what he is about to say is important and we need to listen carefully and pay close attention.
He says “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.”
Jesus here says that the time is coming and has already arrived in which those who are dead in sin will hear his voice and they will be made alive in Christ.
The phrase “an hour is coming, and is now here”
Points us to the fact that Christ is not speaking here about the bodily resurrection that takes place at the last day, he says the time is now here but yet the bodily resurrection is to take place at the end of the age.
In verse 28 the Lord speaks about the bodily resurrection and says an hour is coming but does not say it is now here, when those in the tombs will live.
The event Jesus is speaking of in verse 25 is a spiritual resurrection, he is speaking about the new birth, he is speaking about people being born again.
The dead are the spiritually dead and the life is spiritual life.
