Intro
last night on SNL - Canadian actress, who recently got American citizenship hosted
and as you might expect, this Ottawa born actor talked and joked her way through some of the apparent differences between our two countries
saying we lean towards being “polite” and saying “I’m sorry alot”
talked about how hard it was to “toot her own horn”
she was adjusting to her new Identity
what followed was another American actress “teaching” her about how she could be less Canadian and embrace her American roots...
““You have to learn how to accept a compliment.
… It’s not about the brag; it’s about the swag.
You just have to have confidence.”
Transition
anyway, in a mildy funny intro - it again reminded us that there are differences in our identity - in how we think and act
what would you say our identity looks like to the world - as a nation, as a Canadian, and as a follower of Jesus Christ
last week, we ended our time with Pauls call to live as people with a new identity - to put off the old self - and put on the new self - to recognize they are marked as a new people, with a new identity
they were “Jesus’ people” - as they needed to “dress” like it
what does mark us Jesus’ people - i think in years gone past it was easier - or not - it was marked usually by what we “didn’t do”
but the original intent was that we were marked by the lives we lived out in the world
Living as Jesus’ people:
Continuing from last week
Paul is now fleshing out the graces, the values, the identity, the “new clothes” that we are to be putting on continually as a community - to mark us as his own
this is an encouraging passage that helps us understand our identity - and our responsibilities in the church
The Mandate (3:12a, 14)
“Put on”
like new clothes - a list of graces that should mark God’s people - characterized in Jesus’ life and vital for harmony among God’s new community
and it’s something that needs to be put on… it’s not
Compassionate hearts
lit.
hearts of pity, a tender caring for and about the other persons vulnerability
Kindness
- is gracious sensitivity, seeking the good of others, genuine care for their feelings and desires
Humility
this checks the incessant quest to attain honour and our due, and to rise in the pecking order, fight against arrogance and pride
Meekness
Gentleness, the willingness to make allowances for other people
Patience
refrains from exacting revenge and is willing to endure wrongs
Love
binds them all together - like a robe that keeps them all in check
the unity of God’s new people that Paul describes in 3:11, where racial, cultural, and sociological differences are transcended, is only possible in a community where love it is the rule
The Motive (3:12a)
...As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved
holy
dearly loved
the churches status as God’s people should drive them to these virtues
they are
they have been chosen for service - not for their own benefit
set apart as his holy people - objects of his love - for service
they are a new people , what Christ intended Israel to always be, a people with responsibilities
as God’s chosen people, they to must chose their behaviour
Illust - they are living advertisements of what God’s grace does in human lives - a billboard
The Manner (3:13-17)
how they are to live out these graces - bound together in love
prioritize certain things
Prioritizing Forbearance and Forgiveness (13)
just as the Lord has forgiven you - remembering the Gospel at work in your life
that is to say, the basis of bearing and forgiveness they extended to each other was the forgiveness that had received from the Lord
Prioritizing the Peace of Christ (15)
this a command
not an internal sense of calm - but rather a relational thing between people
these are the relationships in the church
“to rule” means for the peace of Christ to be the “arbiter” or to “act as the umpire” in any disputes, repeating the theme to bear and forgive
Paul reemphasizes the “one body” - it’s our responsibility
if the church is going to thrive under threat of heresy or every cultural pressure, they have to be united
it is vital to the threats that the church faces
and its up to all of us
Prioritizing Gratitude (of Christ) (15b, 16, 17)
this passage drips with gratitude
Be thankful (15)
Singing with gratitude (16)
Giving thanks (17)
Paul seems to be making a point that gratitude is the attitude of God’s people for what Christ has done
#######
Prioritizing the Word of Christ (16)
let it dwell in you richly through teaching, admonishing, singing
it is to get in us - but what is to get into us
WORD = LOGOS (the word)
this is Jesus - the message and mission of Jesus - that is all they had - and it was to root deeply in them - and this would protect them not only from heretical doctrines that were attempting to get into the church but also would keep them unified on on track
Paul uses the plural “you” - you all! to mean the corporate solidarity that was to be theres.
the “WORD” was to dwell in them together as a body of believers
through teaching - preaching
admonishing - calling to account - to advise someone of the dangerous consequences of some happening or action
worship is the priority of the church - the christian church as been a singing church since the beginning - and funny it doesn’t say that you have to sing well
but it does say it comes from a thankful heart
coming from a variety of songs, hymns and spiritual songs
Prioritizing the Reputation of Christ (17)
whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord
could mean - that everything that is said or done should be done as those who represent Jesus
or that everything should be done in a manner consistent with who Jesus is
or that everything should be done to bring honour to Jesus
probably more than one thing is meant - but at it’s minimum Paul is telling us that the “reputation of Christ is is some way represented by the words and actions of the believers - you and me” in the world
again - gratitude is the basis for how we do this
Ingratitude is the evidence of people who hearts are cold to God
without gratitude, it is impossible to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus
So what?
Are we reflecting the “new people of God” values to the world?
“the clothes make the person”
the clothes that we wear as followers of Jesus Christ are critical to display and portray the beauty of what it means to be the new people of Jesus - the church
the walls of our church should be glass that display our lives to the world - and so what are we known for?
it used to be that we don’t smoke or chew of hang out with people that do
but here is what it should be truly known by - what you and me should strive by the Spirit’s power to put on
not only in the easy times but in the tough times
