Romans
In ancient biblical times, when a letter was written by an authority figure and sent to a congregation of believers, the letter in its entirety was read aloud for all to hear.
In light of that understanding, Romans is an authoritative letter written by the Apostle Paul and read aloud by a woman named Phoebe to a Jewish Christian Congregation in Rome.
Released from the law
The letter to the Romans addresses the history, concept, and meaning of Justification by faith, which is God’s free gift of Grace through redemption that came by Jesus Christ

Unpacking Justification by Faith
The biblical patriarch of “Justification by faith” and who’s life preceded the “10 commandments” is Abraham.
His life and journey is recorded in the book of Genesis
Abraham was a Old Testament patriarch who’s life and journey was recorded in the book of Genesis
According to the biblical timeline, Abraham lived approximately 900yrs before God personally engraved the 10 commandments on two stone tablets for Moses and the Jewish people (see ; )
I am Yahweh your God, you shall have no other gods before Me
You shall not make for yourself an idol
You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh
Remember the Sabbath
Honor your father and mother
You shall not kill
You shall not commit adultery
You shall not steal
You shall not bear false witness
You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, wife, and/or anything that belongs to your neighbor
900yrs before “The Law” was given to Moses, God has already declared Abraham justified by faith and it was therefore credited to him as righteousness (see )
The Apostle Paul says, by faith Abraham believed in God’s supernatural power and promise
However, when God gave “The Law” to Moses and the Jewish people it increased trespass against Him
Prior to “The Law”, judgment followed one man’s sin (i.e.
Adam) and brought condemnation and death
The Greek word for “trespass” is “paraptōma”, means breaking trust with God
After “The Law” was given it created more awareness of sin and so trespass increased
However, in Christ grace increased all the more and brought justification for many
Romans 5:18-19
Does God’s increasing grace mean we should continue to sin so grace can continue to increase?
By no means!
Placing our faith and allegiance in Jesus means our old nature was buried with Christ through baptism into death
Just as Jesus was raised from the dead, in the same way, we live a new life
Does being under God’s grace rather then under “The Law” mean we can continue to sin?
By no means!
Christ death has set us free from sin and made us slaves to righteousness
Romans 6:18
Paul uses an analogy of the binding law of “union in marriage” and compares it with the binding grace of “union with Him”
By law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive
If her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man
In the same manner, we were bound to “The Law” and repeatedly reminded that we were controlled by the sinful nature bearing fruit to death
But we have now died to “The Law” through the body of Christ and are Released from “The Law” to serve in the new way of the Spirit in order that we bear fruit to God
We now belong to Him who was raised from the dead
How does God’s grace credit righteousness for our justification?
We must believe in God who delivered Jesus over to death for our sins and raised Him back to life for our justification
The Greek word for “trespass” is “paraptōma”, means breaking trust with God
Romans 4:23-
