John 20:25 NIV
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Is it okay to doubt? Is doubt ever a good thing?
e.g. doubting people or producers of goods/services protects me from unwise purchases; doubting my own decisions helps me make better ones; doubting false beliefs means finding truth;
John 20:19 NIV
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
John 20:25 NIV
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
John
All of the disciples -= not just Thomas - are living in doubt an unbelief. Can you blame them? How do we respond when someone claims a miracle? Claims a near death out of body experience, catching a glimpse of heaven. Is it really such a shock that people would doubt these claims, especially since false claims have been made before - and I’m not just talking about today.
doubt is bad if it results in paralysis
doubt is bad - some evidence (Jesus’ teaching; confirmed by testimony) ; fear; paralysis
how are we paralyzed? Jesus? know about him? heard about him?
John 20:19 NIV
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
remember this verse: I’m going to come back to it; (everyone scared, even w sight)
John 20:198
Look at what fear and doubt can do, even with proof
everyone is barracaded themselves in a house, frightened for their lives. they all doubted. Jesus appears to everyone but Thomas. He was out.
Jesus takes away paralysis; Not take away problems
Not take away problems
focus on the gospel, not programs and strategies,
they are all paralyzed; heard (Jesus/ women testimony / women seen)( still paralyzed) still scared
John 20:25 NIV
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
wanting evidence - teaching, testimony, touch;
John 20:
God’s action depends on ours; God does not act until we do;
stil hiding in a room; security; preservation (e.g. security, preservation) safe, predictible, but unfillling, boring, not seeing miracles
how many miracles do you see? status quo?
John 20:29 NIV
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
God - act of grace; they will tell the world what they have seen, but for God’s sake?
sake?
bigger blessing for those who act without seeing; act before they see God act; see God’s action because they have acted in faith
still a blessing for seeing and believing.
Matthew 28:16–17 NIV
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
John 20:298
Matthew 28:
seeing means believing?
