What is Prayer?

PRAYER—is converse with God; the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to him. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, ejaculatory or formal. It is a “beseeching the Lord” (Ex. 32:11); “pouring out the soul before the Lord” (1 Sam. 1:15); “praying and crying to heaven” (2 Chr. 32:20); “seeking unto God and making supplication” (Job 8:5); “drawing near to God” (Ps. 73:28); “bowing the knees” (Eph. 3:14).

James 4:8 NKJV
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James

I believe God moves on His people at times when we are not seeking it but this verse indicates that we can also make the first move.
Smith Wigglesworth said “If the Spirit’s not moving, I’ll move him!”
My relationship with my wife wouldn’t be that great if she had to do all the initiation. If she had to start every conversation, make for the first move towards all the affection, and be the one to come up with all the ideas to keep our marriage healthy. In order for it to be a healthy marriage we both have to initiate love for one another. Proof of desire is pursuit.
David Cried out:
Mark 5:28–29 NKJV
28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” 29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
The woman with the issue of Blood initiated her connection with God.
What would ignite and cause us to respond to Gods calling to draw near? HUNGER AND THIRST
Psalm 42:2–4 NKJV
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, “Where is your God?” 4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.
Ps 42:
Psalm 63:1 NKJV
1 O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.
Thirst and Hunger is a powerful motivator to have a prayer life. Next is we need to pray in faith.
1 John 5:14–15 NKJV
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

Prayer is surrender—surrender to the will of God and cooperation with that will. If I throw out a boat hook from a boat and catch hold of the shore and pull, do I pull the shore to me, or do I pull myself to the shore? Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God.

How can we know the will of God? Its simple: We first go to the Bible. Second we are led by the Spirit.
The Bible is Gods word and His will is not separate from His Word. He doesn’t say one thing and will another. We do that but God is not a lier.
So we know the Bible is His will and so we can pray the scriptures knowing we are praying God’s will.
Psalm 91:10–11 NKJV
10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
