Introduction: The 7 Year Journey of Pruning

Prayer meeting: I see you in a car…getting stripped
My Problem: I couldn’t see my VALUE outside of MINISTRY

Big Idea: The path of Jesus is the path of total surrender

Big Idea: Total Surrender means trading my trinkets for God’s treasure

The Problem:
Consumer culture conditions us towards entitlement
Our modern day idols (page 39 in LC Book)
My individual rights get in the way (entitlement)
Even our Blessings…if not stewarded correctly…will become Burdens
Suddenly my job becomes my identity..my stuff becomes my focus…

Every time we see Mary in the NT, she is in a posture of surrender....

Matthew 26:6–13 NLT
Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head. The disciples were indignant when they saw this. “What a waste!” they said. “It could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, replied, “Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”

Mary shows us that surrender looks like...

At the feet of Jesus, Mary shows us that surrender looks like...

1. Trading productivity for presence

Luke 10:38–42 NLT
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-39

John 11:32 NLT
When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
Mary: ditches protocol and runs to his feet and bears her burden
Martha: I know you can do anything...
John 11:
John 11:22 NLT
But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”
John 11:24 NLT
“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”
John 11:27 NLT
“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”

3. Giving my best

Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.

But you only get there on the path to surrender....
But you only get there on the path to surrender....

Apply: Surrender

Your right to hold a grudge until ‘they’ say ‘I’m Sorry”
Your entitlement to your dream....
Your relationship…even if you’re scared that you’ll never find someone else
Your right to be right...
Your ‘me time’…your time to relax…your workouts....
But it hurts too much:
the pain of accepting God’s process is nothing compared to the pain of avoiding it

Conclusion: When I saw my dad on his knees in worship
