Listening to God

What is the Bible?

The Bible is a collection of 66 books, written by about 40 authors in three languages over about 1,000 years. It has a variety of genres, yet it has an amazing unity of outlook and purpose.
Why? Because it is “God-breathed”. What does that mean?
;
‘God-breathed’ means that it is a product of God’s Spirit working through the words of the human witnesses. This means the words of Scripture (the Bible) must always be understood as God’s own words.’

What does the Bible say about itself?
It gives hope -
It lasts longer than forever -
It accomplishes a purpose in our lives -
It is living, dynamic, and understands us -
It is all about Jesus -
4) The Bible is not primarily a history book or a textbook or a handbook of ethics, even though it contains elements of all three. It is primarily about God’s intervention into our world to rescue us from our self-centeredness and bring us into relationship with Him through Jesus.
Why do we read it?
It connects us
A prerequisite for relationship is the ability to contradict the other person.
One person demanding the change but not changing themselves is abusive and not loving.
God made the first move and changed for us first. He is simply asking us to reciprocate the love he has shown us.
(Stepford Wives) God does not simply say, “Yes dear!”. He is not an imaginary God. He has His own will.
It’s a prime way of keeping in touch with the Lord -

It challenges us
It’s a mirror to show us what we are like -
It’s a sword to be used in temptation -
It’s a hammer to break us down -
It’s sweet as honey, nourishing as milk or meat - ;
It can cleanse us, guide us, give peace and wisdom - , , ;
Without it we cannot grow - ; ;
