Existentialists: “Self-evident that life is tragic and bitter”
If you want it, you will sacrifice for it.
“Self-evident that life is tragic and bitter”
What are your deepest values?
Better and worse ways to dealing with this- to live authentically to this truth.
No one can take the adventure of life away from you.
Religion is more the superstition!
Religion is for purpose!
Reason for Religion: Ultimate extension of our capacity to offer an ideal. Fills life with meaning.
Question: How much meaning is there in striving for the ultimate ideal?
Yung: “Watch your fantasies because they are always happening and they will tell you something.”
Yung: “Watch your fantasies because they are always happening and they will tell you something.”
Grab thoughts and notice them.
“You don’t get what you don’t aim at” and “You might get what you aim at.” If you specify the nature of the being you want to bring into being, that radially increases that to occur.” “Active creative agents.” “You’re not living up to your potential.”
“You might get what you aim at.” If you specify the nature of the being you want to bring into being, that radially increases that to occur.” “Active creative agents.” “You’re not living up to your potential.”
What is your greatest fear?
What do you fear?
Recurring dream
What do you fear?
I John2:15: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Recurring dream: My greatest fear can drive my values. Don’t mess anyone up. Don’t create conflict. Appease and meet people’s expectations. Perform well. Don’t fail.
How many of these values are striving for the Kingdom!
: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Desire the Will of God

Introduction:

Don’t think of a purpose elephant
Don’t covet your neighbor’s house, wife, servants, ox/donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
But are we given a command we can’t obey? Do we just cry uncle and suggest that we can’t defeat this so we just sort of live with it?
But are we given a command we can’t obey? Do we just cry uncle and suggest that we can’t defeat this so we just sort of live with it?
Absolutely not. : Fight the good fight of the faith.
What is this Command forbidding us not do?
Don’t desire things that don’t belong to you.
Don’t envy your neighbor’s family, financial status, careers, and toys. They aren’t yours. God didn’t give them to you, so don’t fantasize about having them.
Thou Shalt Not Covet is about What Fantasies having and using things that belong to other people
Thou Shalt Not Covet is about What Fantasies we Create and Strive for that are Separate from the Kingdom of God
What are your Fantasies?
The Desires of the “Flesh”
Fantasy will tell you what you value

How do you Discover what you Covet?
Instinctual cravings vs. Deepest Longing
Some of it is automatic!
Me see, me like vs. Who am I?
Deeper ones
Deepest Longing: Comes out in our Dreams, fears and anxieties.
EXAMPLE: My Anxiety Dream:
Flesh: Humanity approval
Reoccurring Dream
Need to be Prepared
Need to Not be Viewed as Unprepared
Need for Approval:
Flesh: Humanity approval
Fear of Rejection
Fear of Disppointment
Desires of the Eye
Manage what people see.
Level of Narcissism
Pride of Life:
Fear of unpreparedness
Fear of looking like a fraud
Fear of appearing inauthentic
What do you fear?
What causes you anxiety?
Dark Desire vs. Divine Desire
My greatest fear can drive my values. Don’t mess anyone up. Don’t create conflict. Appease and meet people’s expectations. Perform well. Don’t fail.

Yung: “Watch your fantasies because they are always happening and they will tell you something.”
What do they all tell us??
Life is short
I don’t have it all together
The things we crave and actually get really don’t satisfy.
We do disappoint people.
We can be inauthentic.
We can be unprepared
All the things that I have feared feel real because they are real.
Transition:
That’s why we need to invest in the eternal!
That’s why we need to go back to the text:
Desires and Behaviors
17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Investment in this world is a depreciating activity.
Goes against Reformed thinking
“The present age is doomed.” John Stott
“Only those who passions rest in the Father will continue forever.”
Theme of Love: Love the Father, and to Love the Father is Produced in Us by the Father
Desires and Behaviors
“If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
Desires dictate what we value, and what we value is what we will sacrifice for.
This Kind of Love is Not from the Father
“If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
“If anyone loves the Father, the love of the world is not in him.”
We won’t strive for and plot out how to get that house, that wife, that child, that talent, that career, that salary, that education, that truck, that phone.
Love of the Father helps properly align our other desires.
: See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
Love what Comes from the Father
“You don’t get what you don’t aim at” and “You might get what you aim at.” If you specify the nature of the being you want to bring into being, that radially increases that to occur.”
“You don’t get what you don’t aim at” and “You might get what you aim at.” If you specify the nature of the being you want to bring into being, that radially increases that to occur.”
This is why Lent is so important
Invest in Eternal Activities
Giving something up reminds us of our dependance on God.
Do the will of God
Rest in Christ
Reminds us of eternal things

: I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 The anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 2727 The anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. Anointing given ‘abides’. NIV: Remains
It’s not going anywhere

27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

Hope: Even when your struggle

Love what Comes from the Father
Divine Desire: What do you love?
When we covet stuff, we aren’t behaving like God’s Children. We are behaving like orphans, looking for fulfillment and purpose in all the wrong places.
20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.
Orphan Mentality:
Professor Andy Bilson, emeritus professor of social work, University of central Lancashire, England
Research has also highlighted negative consequences of institutional care on behaviour, including social competence, play, and peer and sibling interactions. These include higher levels of apathy, restlessness, disobedience, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, attention-seeking, sleep disorders, eating disorders and stereotypical behaviours (e.g. rocking, head banging, self-harming) and lower levels of social maturity, attentiveness, concentration and communication.
Negative Consequences of Orphanages:
Babies produce high levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and this has a damaging effect on the architecture of their brains at a crucial stage in their development.

Delays in IQ, language, speech and vocabulary. A meta-analysis of 75 studies covering over 3,800 children in 19 countries found that children reared in orphanages had, on average, an IQ 20 points lower than their peers who were growing up in foster care.
Delays in physical growth – including height, weight and head circumference. Analysis of growth data from a variety of orphanage systems in Romania, the former Soviet Union and China has shown that children lose one month of physical growth for every three months spent in an orphanage.
10 times more likely to enter prostitution and 40 times more likely to get a criminal record.
Some studies claim children from orphanages are 10 times more likely to enter prostitution and 40 times more likely to get a criminal record. The impersonal environment of orphanages can leave children totally unprepared for life in the outside, world. United Nations (IOM) research from Moldova shows how girls growing up in orphanages are ten times more likely to be a victim of trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation. And crucially, as adults, children from orphanages are far more likely to have their children placed in orphanages– thus perpetuating the cycle.

80 per cent of children in orphanages today are not even orphans. They’ve been separated from parents because of poverty, disabilities or discrimination.

Millions of people in this world are living as orphanages, and it’s stunting their spiritual IQ, growth, and ability to be known and to be loved.
They have lost their ability to cry out for help! To raise our hands and ask the Father for things like a baby. Crave the Lord like pure spiritual milk.
WE HAVE A FATHER! The world has a Father, and he has been revealed to us in Jesus.
Gospel: We can be brought into this Family because of the work of Jesus!
Through Jesus, we are able to cry out Abba
Have you learned how to cry?
Have you allowed to rest in the Freedom of the Gospel
Are you behaviors changed because of the Gospel?
Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

Rather than salivating over what is not ours, we desire the will of the Father
