Good Evening I’d like to invite you this evening to take a look with me into what the Bible says about God’s Holy Spirit. One of the most important things we can say about the Holy Spirit is that He is a person, He is not an influence He is not a feeling, He is not courage even though He may produce some of those effects but thats not who He is.
(Let’s Pray)
He is a person, and when we are inhabited by Jesus Christ, we get the Father, we get the Son and we get the Holy Spirit. It is impossible to having the Holy Spirit living within us without also having the Father and the Son living inside of us, Jesus made that clear in the upper room when He said.
My Father will come and I will come and WE will come and make our abode with Him. Tonight’s message is on sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.
Becoming sensitive to the God that is within us. I remember back when Mrs. Marie Traywick was still on this old Earth. I would be sitting in the office and all of a sudden I would have this nudging that something was wrong with Mrs. Marie.
More than once I jumped up from the desk and hopped in the truck and drove to the house. Every time that happened something had gone wrong.
I came three times and she had fallen, she needed help getting up, there was once I pulled in when the ambulance was pulling up at the same time.
It truly is amazing what can happen when we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. That is just one example. But what do I mean when I say being sensitive to the Holy Spirit within?
I remember being out at a restaurant for lunch with a church member one day and seeing this man who was being insensitive to his wife and he didnt get it either he was thinking A. I am not doing anything wrong to her.
B. Even if I am its not big deal
Now thats the way we treat the Holy Spirit, you see we grieve the Holy Spirit and we say to ourselves its not that big a deal, were greiving Him and we dont even know it.
Today I want the Spirit to uncover ways we grieve Him so that we are made more blessable. God wants to bless us and how do we become more blessable?
Ephesians 4:22 ESV
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
Ephesians 4:
Are you ever amazed at how right the Bible is?
It calls these desires decietful because they are....
Ephesians 4:23 ESV
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
Ephesians
Ephesians 4:24 ESV
and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
When we are born again it is a massive deal, when we get saved it is a huge deal. Because God comes to live within us through the third person of the trinity the Holy Spirit.
What the Spirit of God does is He creates a space, within us where He can live. He comes to live inside of you.
I was young in the faith but I never will forget the chills that ran down my spine when I first heard this next verse.
Ephesians 4:30 ESV
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:
The Spirit of God is very sensitive He is likened unto a dove because doves are sensitive birds and the Spirit isnt gonna force Himself on you. You see one of the mistakes we make is that because we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us, we think we dont have to seek Him.
But of course that’s wrong, in the OT you remember David knewgod very well and yet he kept saying I seek the Lord. WHY?
It is in the process of seeking God that we make ourselves blessable. Where we deal with issues that grieve the Spirit, when He reveals them to us.
It is there that we are pointed to Jesus. WE MUST SEEK THE HOLY SPIRIT IN ALL HIS FULLNESS AND GREAT GLORY.
DONT GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
Tonight I want to give you 5 transformations that salvation should bring about in our hearts.
Each of these will have ways that we grieve the Spirit and ways in which we please the Spirit. Paul says its like putting off the old man, the old clothes and putting on the new clothes. So that the Holy Spirit might feel at home living within us, and not grieved.

From Lying to Truhfulness

Ephesians 4:25 ESV
Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
Ephesians
If you are brought up in a home where there was lots of lying, where there was covering for family sin and you had to lie for him or her, and you lied as a family, you’ll grow up wanting to hide and conceal, wanting to lie and tell lies, hopefully at some point it’ll stop.
But if you were brought up in a home where truth was important you may still become a liar. You may lie because of self protection, you want to guard what youve done. You want to look good and you dont want the truth to come out.
Or
Either way we have all been tempted to lie. The Bible says that we should speak truth to one another, to our neighbors, to our friends, to our wives, and to our husbands.
Now its interesting that I saw an article the other day that said the average american tells 11 lies every week. The apostle Paul says put all lies aside. Dont lie to yourself, dont lie to others because in the end you are lying to GOd.
Remember Annanias and Saphirra? They thought they were lying to the church and Peter comes along and said you’ve not lied to the church but to God.
Those little white lies you tell you’ve lied to God not to men. Some of you are living a lie for whatever reason and God wants you to clean it up because the Spirit is a Spirit of truth and He is sensitive to it.
The HS brings it to the surface so we can deal with it. It’s amazing what price people are willing to pay to protect themselves. I mean think about it if we are willing to lie to God to protect ourselves then we are willing to stand in the face of a Holy God and lie to His face.
WOW.
So that her older
Well lets go to number two
I can tell you exactly how to stope lying if your trouble is habitual lying.
I mean you can stop in two weeks.
Every time you tell a lie I want you to stop right then and there and tell the person youre talking to I want you to know I just lied to you. It’ll work. Pretty soon the lies wont come out of your mouth.

From Anger to Self Control

Why?
Because the Holy Spirit of God enables us to control ourselves.
Ephesians 4:26 ESV
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Ephesians 4:27 ESV
and give no opportunity to the devil.
Be angry and do not sin
There is a legitimate anger. We should be angry at child abuse at all of the injustice in the world. There is such a thing as righteous anger, in fact God is angry with the wicked everyday we read in the OT but dont sin when you do.
don’t respond in a way you are going to regret. Don sin, dont go to bed angry.
Dont become angry and give the devil an opportunity. Let me say something to those who are abusers and no one knows it, you were verbally or physically abused and now your abusing. You keep telling yourself you are not going to do it again, you need help, and you need accountability.
You need repentance if anybody is listening to this and you are verbally abusing your wife or children STOP IT, Get help because your not only lying to God your destroying a child, or a person.
So what he says is when angry do not sin. Do not give Satan a opportunity. Do not give Satan a place, you know what this is like. You go to the door and there is someone out there that you dont wanna let in but they get their foot in the door, and now what are you going to do?
The devil loves to instigate to aggravate, to cause anger, why? Because its so destructive. You do things when your angry that you regret that you cannot undo.
Somebody says well I just blow up and get it over with oh yeah yeah and all the pieces lay there. You might ask for forgiveness and it may be granted by the person you did that to but you do that too many times and it becomes hallow, and the anger is destructive and goes from one generation to another, a whole generation of angry children because of some angry parents.
Deal with that anger recognize it as sinful and the Holy Spirit will help you, the church will help you if you confide in someone, accountability will help you.
DO NOT SIN because the devil wants to use your anger to kill, to destroy and to wreck homes and marriages and churches.

Dont be a take but a giver

Ephesians 4:28 ESV
Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
People steal today, they steal by suing anyone they can get their hands on, by taking what is not theirs even ideas.
People steal its amazing what even good people will do when big money is flashed in their face. So what he is saying is do not steal but rather work with your hands.
It is true that if thieves work with their hands it becomes theraputic. In prisons they use this as therapy. It says work in such a way that you can give. Replace your stinginess with generosity. By the way you wanna spend a thousand dollars at a casino dont do it, because you’ll probably lose.
But even if you win it your winning someone elses money that you dont own or deserve.
so instead use it on Christian ministry, at least that way you know your going to get an awesome return it’ll met you again in Heaven then what you do is you become generous why?
Because that is really the opposite of stealing. Maybe you say “I dont steal you dont steal but if you dont give the Bible says your still a thief, because your not acknowledging God to be the owner of all that you have.
So giving becomes very very important not stealing. When the Holy Spirit has His way in a church and in a community there are all kinds of issues that people have to deal with.
(Detergent)
But now when the Holy Spirit God who makes us sensitve begins to speak to us and we say we gotta make that right. I carried the detergent back in and when I came up to the register the lady standing there, was looking at me funny.
I told her what had happened she stood there with a smile on her face and I asked is everything ok?
She said I remember you, you came in with 3 children last year some time. I said wow do I have a face that is that recognizable?
She said no, but you had done the same thing with a package of toilet paper and you brought it back to pay for it. I have not had one person do that since then and now that it has happened again it is you.
I said oh well… but before i could finish she said are you religious?
I said no mam but I have the Lord Jesus living in my heart. He wouldn’t let me take this home knowing I had not paid for it. We ended up talking for about 10 minutes about the gospel.
It wasn’t a big deal to me, it is just something i have convictions about. That came from God Himself but when people see righteousness it shakes them up...
You see in some ways you and I become so insensitive to the Spirit that we wound the Spirit we displease the Spirit we greive the Spirit and we do not even know it having justified what we have done.

No corrupt talk

Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29
The Bible says regarding the tongues of the wicked in the book of Romans their throat is an open grave. What the means is stench…
Have you ever met somebody and all that can come out of his mouth is evil and cussing?
Jesus said from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. I wanna talk to you about slander.. criticizing other people. you see the reason we do this is because if we can chop other people down if we can take them off the pedastal maybe we ourselves look just a little better.
Can I tell you something Cottonwood Alabama is filled with good salt of the Earth people I love it here. But if there is one area where Satan has blinded hearts it is here in the realm of slander. But we mask it as concern, we mask it as we care when in reality we just want to let others know that we disagree or we dont like someone else.
Gossip is the poison of our culture here.
That may not be easy to hear but you know in your heart its true.
Psalm 141:3 ESV
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!
Psalm
How I wish that we would memorize this passage of scripture. We are all guilty of wanting to exalt ourselves by the criticism of others. By saying I would have never done it that way look at what they have done.
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:
Years ago I heard a story that a man went to the attorneys office and said I cant take it anymore she does this, this, this and this.
The attoney said you really hate her dont you, he said I HATE HER
he said you wanna hurt her?
The man said I want to really hurt her, he said I really want to hurt her.
the attoney says well if you wanna really do that, let me give you a siggestion. you can always divorce her, if you divorce her now she would kind of be expecting it. Heres what you do postpne your divorce for a month or two and during that time dont say one negative thing about her.
Just build her up, tell her how beautiful she is, tell her what a great cook she is everything she does, remember dont criticize her remember you have plenty of time and then as you build her up she begins to think oh this relationshio is going very good. Then you give her the divorce papers and itll hurt her more.
The guys says ok ill try it.
for a month or two he commended everything rather than coming in and telling her while she was making dinner and telling her that the thing in the pan looked like an unidentified frying object.
He now said I just love the way you make dinner, I love the way you dress, thank you for doing this, and doing that. Well you know what the story is?
a month later they decided it was time for a second honey moon.
Imagine the power of encouraging words that build up, rather than tear down.
If you sit around in a group and criticize and slander you need to know something, you are working for the devil, afterall that is what the word devil means SLANDERER.

Bitterness and anger

Ephesians 4:31 ESV
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
6 different words to refer to the resentments and anger and whatever is in the human heart, 6 different words to describe it. Paul wants to get it all.
