Jesus the Great High Priest
Jesus begins with prayer for Himself:
Father, the hour has come:
Christ would face the cross.
This prayer takes place before Jesus would be arrested , beaten, mocked, and then hung on the Cross and slain.
The theme of these verse Jn 17:1-5 is that Jesus has finished the work of Salvation- “I have glorified you on the earth” Jesus looked at the cross as away of glorifying God

The Priest was responsible for the sacrifice of atonement which came through a lamb.
The Priest would pray over the sacrifice and then would make the sacrifice- the Lam was a substitute foe the people who had sinned

Jesus here prays for those who are His own and their protection and their unity.
The work of the cross is sufficient for all.
There never needs to be another sacrifice, yet there are some who don’t experience the work of the cross in their lives.
Believing and confessing is the key, and here Jesus is praying for those who have believed, confessed and would go out into the
Jesus says (Jn 17:19) “for their sake I consecrate myself, that they may be sanctified in truth.”
To be consecrate is to be set apart for a certain task- For Christ that purpose was the Cross, and through His body being broken and His blood being spilled, believers can be “sanctified”
Sanctification- A progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and more like Christ in our actual lives

John 17:17 “Your word is truth”
We have truth- God’s Word

This is Jesus’ prayer for us- Those who would believe
Jesus before going to the cross prayer for us that we would be one with Him- This is what the work of the cross does for us:
It is because of the Jesus’ sacrifice that you and I find forgiveness, find healing, find peace even is a world that is full of hurt, pain, sin, anger.
Today Christ wants you to understand the power of the cross
Christ came to seek and save the lost
Are you Lost? Look to the one who was raised up on the cross so that you could be made whole, find peace, and find forgiveness
Christ came so that you could find new life
Are you broken and hurt?
Look to the cross where Christ bore your sorrows, and shame and find New Life with a hope that extends far beyond this world
Christ came so you could have hope
